Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1895
1868. PCGS graded AU-58. Nice light gold tone. A rare date. Only 10,630 minted. Near Mint State detail with light pinkish-gold color and some radial luster. A touch of reflectivity to the fields and some original mint frost in the protected areas of the devices. All of the With Motto eagles from 1866 through 1873 (Closed 3) had low mintages and Condition Census survivors generally are in the choice AU range. The 1868, with a recorded mintage of 10,730, has the largest mintage of any Philadelphia eagle produced from 1866-1873. With that said, do not be deceived into thinking that this issue is easy to locate in the choice AU range. In fact, only a single Uncirculated example has been graded by PCGS (MS62) and very few AU58 examples. One thing is for sure, the present 1868 is a Condition Census example of a tough year, and time frame, for eagles. Identified by a scuff in the field near stars 1 and 2, another over the top of Liberty’s head, as well as a chattermark below TR of TRUST on the reverse. Pop 11; 1 finer in 62 (PCGS # 8653) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Lot 1896
1869. NGC graded AU-53. Only 1,830 minted. Untoned with some luster evident. Still reflective in the areas around the stars and letters; light reddish-gold with pockets of mint sparkle remaining. A truly scarce example of this valued rarity. The few business strikes that were produced of the date mostly entered circulation, creating a low-mintage figure by anyone’s reckoning. Walter Breen called this date "Unknown Uncirculated," while Akers noted that he had "Not seen a strictly Uncirculated 1869." There is, however, now one top-end specimen grading PCGS MS64 (the Bass specimen). While occasional About Uncirculated specimens available, it takes patience and perhaps a bit of luck to find one, since they are typically offered "few and far between" as our old adage goes. This rarity will elicit a definite interest as it makes its entry into sale Pop 6; 16 finer (PCGS # 8655) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

Lot 1897
1869-S. NGC graded AU-55. Light golden toning on both sides. Only 6,430 minted. Exceedingly choice surfaces with original luster and attractive warm gold toning at the edge. A high-grade example of this "Very rare" (Breen) issue, the same writer adding: "Prohibitively rare EF." Much luster is still evident in protected areas as well as out in the open fields where circulation wear first makes its presence known.

Date logotype thinly impressed into the die and slightly high. Reverse with tiny S mintmark also lightly impressed into the die, left of and about even with the lowest feather tip. For a change, the left side of the ribbon with IN GOD WE TRUST is sharply defined. Bold feather definition and a complete shield on this often weak side of the $10 denomination. Pop 9; 4 finer, 3 in 58, 1 in 61 (PCGS # 8656) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,500.

Lot 1898
1871. NGC graded AU-58. Mostly untoned with reflective fields. Light surface abrasions, there is a fine scratch by the 13th star. Prooflike, as are most, if not all. Sharply struck and generally attractive given this coin’s acknowledged rarity. Condition Census quality. With so few business strikes minted, possibly as few as 40 to 75 pieces are all that exist today. Coin for coin, year after year, issue upon issue, $10 Gold Eagles tend to be rarer than any other denominations, including the more export-oriented $20 Double Eagle. The specialist in this series will recognize at once that this as a landmark occasion to take advantage of what we consider to be an extraordinary opportunity. The new owner should feel comfortable with the ownership of the piece offered in this Lot. Pop 9; none finer at NGC (PCGS # 8660) .

Lot 1899
1871-CC. PCGS graded AU-58. Nice golden toning. Scarce "CC" mint. Only 8,085 minted. 1871-CC checks in as a significant rarity among the $10 Liberty issues produced at the Carson City Mint. Relatively few were minted, and all seem to have been put into circulation. There was no interest on the part of numismatists at the time.

The present piece is quite attractive, ranking as it does high in the NGC Census, with just one graded finer. The striking is good, much luster is present, the rarity is unquestioned, and all elements are in place for this to create a stir when it crosses the block. There is a small mark on the face angling down onto the neck. Elsewhere, only light field abrasions. Pop 2; 1 finer in 62+ (PCGS # 8661) .

Gold ore yields on the Comstock Lode were on the rise in 1871, yet the Carson Mint was not receiving the benefit of it. Output from the mines in the region was reported to be over $4 million that year, but only 25% of it was deposited at the local mint. From that amount, nearly $470,000 was turned into gold coins, with Eagles accounting for 15% of that total. There is no way to ascertain where the 1871-CC Eagles wound up after they left Nevada, or for that matter, how many actually left the state, but as with many "CC" issues, apparently few were saved.

The rarity can partly be explained by exports. It was in 1871 that the United States began sending large quantities of gold coins to foreign lands, over $55 million in gold coins in 1871 alone. Though Carson City’s gold coin output was consistently lower than Philadelphia’s and San Francisco’s, significant quantities of CC’s left the country as evidenced by occasional small hoards returning from overseas or South America.

This date has a slightly higher survival ratio than many CC gold issues of the era, but because of the low original mintage, it still ranks in the top 10 in overall rarity.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

1871-S. PCGS graded AU-55. Mostly untoned. A scarce date. Only 16,500 minted. With so few made, the 1871-S eagle had an adequate coinage total for the day; however, the coin’s survival was hit or miss, mostly miss. Extremely Fine examples are available for a price, easy to obtain. About Uncirculated examples are a different story. This Choice AU 55 shows minor high point friction only, with some scattered light to marks only, the golden surfaces remain lustrous in areas. Well struck for the collector of S-mint Liberty tens.Pop 4; 2 finer, 1 in 55+, 1 in 58 (PCGS # 8662) .

1874-S. PCGS graded AU-50. A hint of light gold tone. Only 10,000 minted. A low-mintage issue which has a comparatively good survival rate in worn grades (mainly Very Fine to Extremely Fine). AU50 coins, however, are considerably rarer. Traces of luster remain in the areas around the devices; surfaces reveal an light distribution of harmless marks, while a good strike vitalizes the design features. Pop 10; 11 finer, 6 in 53, 3 in 55, 2 in 58 (PCGS # 8671) .

Lot 1903
1877. PCGS graded AU-55. Lovely golden toning with reflective fields. Only 797 struck with merely 50 examples estimated to have survived. A classic rarity from the 1870s decade. Low mintage for any business strike, all of which remaining 1877 Liberty tens which have any luster remaining seem to display Prooflike fields from die polish. Possibly so few were made that the dies failed to wear away the polish by the time they were retired at the end of the year. This particular coin is exceptionally choice for the grade, the cheek on Liberty does have moderate tick marks, but nothing deep or worthy of note elsewhere. The diagnostic die polish is noted on IN and ST of the reverse motto. Breen notes that possibly 10-12 survive, but we suggest that number is perhaps closer to 15 to 20, which seems more in line with the census figures published by the grading services. Well struck, with attractive toning. Pop 5; 7 finer, 5 in 58, 1 in 60, 1 in 61 (PCGS # 8677) .

1886. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. A lovely coin. Strikingly beautiful rolling-fresh finish, bright as when first issued, awash in originality, the golden hue includes a light peach accent to the golden sparkle. Difficult to find, the most often seen dates in this series are the far commoner 1901, 1901-S and 1902-S. Dates in the 1880s, by comparison, rarely seem to be this outstanding. Both the peripheries and the central reverse are detailed and close to 100% crisp for their sharpness of strike. This includes the stars, which is a forceful reminder in a coin from the Philadelphia mint that it is quality that counts.Pop 7; 1 finer in 64+ (PCGS # 8708) .
