1817 N-7 R7 (without mouse) G4. Sharpness VG8, even stronger on the reverse, but both sides are covered with uniform moderate granularity. No verdigris, and the only mark is a dull dent at the bottom of the wreath. The date is weak thanks to an uneven strike but it remains readable. Slightly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. Extremely rare EDS, before the "Mouse" break on top of the head. Struck with the reverse die misaligned to K-1.

1820/19 N-2 R2 Overdate Small 20 over 19. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Lustrous frosty chocolate brown and steel with lighter golden steel brown toning faded down from mint color in protected areas, especially on the reverse. This cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only notable defect is a spot of extremely faint roughness near the dentils right of the date. Sharply struck MDS with fine die rust covering the portrait. The undertype 19 remains clearly visible on both digits. A premium example of this popular overdate variety. Our grade is MS60+. The overdate feature is noted on the NGC label.

1821 N-2 R1. NGC graded MS-62 Brown. Glossy mix of light brown and darker chocolate. Sharply struck and attractive but not quite perfect. There is a faint diagonal planchet void passing through the eye and tiny traces of extremely fine roughness can be found hidden under the toning on the obverse. None of these defects are visible to the unaided eye. MDS. The die line from the bust tip that shows in the early state is gone but there is no crumbling in the dentils at stars 6 & 7. Our grade is AU50 sharpness net EF45.

1829 N-3 R3 Small Letters Reverse. ANACS graded EF-40. The obverse is glossy medium brown and light chocolate while the reverse is frosty chocolate and olive brown with bluish steel overtones. Both sides display attractive flowline luster in the protected areas. The only notable defects are a half dozen light rim bruises on both sides, the strongest of these at star 7. This cent offers nice eye appeal in spite of the rim marks. MDS. Our grade is VF30+ net VF25. The ANACS label incorrectly identifies this as a Large Letters variety.

1829 N-7 R3 VF20. The "Wheelspoke Reverse" variety. Attractive glossy light chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and attractive, void of any distracting marks. LDS with 5 strong radial die cracks from the wreath to the dentils (the 5 "spokes" of the wheel). A nice example of this tough variety.

1830 N-6 R4 Small Letters Reverse VF25. Ten points sharper but there is a very shallow spot of fine corrosion on the neck and another smaller one on the bottom of the bust above the 8. These two spots are not very distracting but they do contain microscopic traces of dark verdigris. The other notable defects are a scuff of very faint hairlines on the neck, a few tiny nicks at LIB, a tiny rim nick right of star 13, and a stain of fine carbon at UNITED STATE. Glossy steel brown and light chocolate, slightly darker at UNITED STATE due to the carbon dust. MDS with a fine die crack from the bust tip. This example is nicely struck, which is quite unusual for the variety. All the stars show complete radials and there is no notable weakness on the portrait or wreath. A decent example of this tough "Redbook" variety.

1831 N-7 R1 Large Letters. PCGS graded AU-58. Choice glossy steel brown and chocolate with traces of frosty golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas on the obverse. No notable contact marks, but there is a tiny swipe of darker steel toning at stars 1-2 and along the tops of D-STATE. MDS. There are fine radial die flowlines off the dentils but the crumbling has not formed in the notch on the right side of the R in AMERICA. A fine but clear double profile caused by die bounce shows on the lips, chin, neck, ERTY, 31 in the date, and stars 12 & 13. An attractive cent. Our grade is EF45+. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.

1841 N-1 (Proof Only) R5. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red. Brilliant mint red just starting to mellow to light steel brown with 90% of the original color remaining. This cent offers exceptional eye appeal, just a few tiny specks of dark toning from gem status. The best identifying marks are a tiny spot resting atop the head under star 7, two more at the dentils near star 13, and one more between the feet of the S & T in STATES. Sharply struck (which surprisingly is not always the case for this proof-only issue). Near the top of the condition census for the variety and one of the "reddest" proof large cents known. A superb date or type coin for the Petite Head large cent. Our grade is consistent with the slab grade.

1848 N-38 R3. PCGS graded MS-63 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous bright original mint red just starting to fade to light steel brown on the highpoints, about 70% of the mint color remaining. This cent offers great eye appeal. The only flaws are a thin, shallow diagonal scrape on the cheek and a couple tiny ticks in the hair over the B in LIBERTY. Otherwise this cent is a gem. EDS, die state a. Fine die lines are visible at UNITED and ERIC. Called MS63 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #30604. Our grade is MS64, CC#1 in the Grellman census. 1852 N-12 R1. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. CAC Approved. Highly lustrous bluish steel and olive brown with generous traces of mint red showing on the obverse. This cent offers great eye appeal. The only marks are a speck of carbon midway between star 1 and the throat, a couple more at the dentils near star 2, and a spot of dark toning (not carbon) that connects star 13 to the adjacent curl. None of these spots is at all distracting. MDS, die state b. The repunching on the date that is seen in the early state is gone, the fields are flowlined, and a die crack connects the bust tip to star 1. This is Newcomb's old #13. Called MS63 and tied for CC#4 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #55143. Our grade is MS63 as well, tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.
