Flying Eagle Cents and Indian Head Cents

Lot 916
1856 PCGS graded PR Genuine AU Details. Cleaning. Only 1,500 minted. Key date. The government’s imminent approval of a statute to alter the amalgam of the Cent in 1856 left Mint Director Snowden pleading for a design to begin trial strikings without delay. The task of achieving a satisfactory product in this environment fell to James Barton Longacre. For the obverse, the designer selected a variant of the flying eagle that adorned the reverse of the 1836-9 Gobrecht Pattern Dollars. Although nearly two decades had passed, this eagle hadn’t faded into obscurity; it had appeared on several Patterns of 1854-5 (also by Longacre). The reverse got a copy of the wreath of corn, cotton, maple, and tobacco that already appeared on Longacre’s Dollar and $3 Gold pieces. Despite the short production run of this design, the rarity and allure of 1856 Proof strikings insured that it would remain forever a part of the collecting lore and popularity.

Collectors realized early on that these had a very low mintage. Years ago one ardent fellow cornered a group of 756 pieces! Remember, however, this was during a time when there were fewer collectors than coins. That long-ago hoard was distributed; meanwhile, the collecting fraternity blossomed like a field of springtime flowers (PCGS # 2037) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

1859. PCGS graded MS-65. Satin surfaces that are well frosted with pleasant, glowing copper-nickel color. So much, then, for the luster, though collectors who have the opportunity to view this original Gem 65 before the sale will enjoy spending several minutes studying the beautiful surfaces. As for the devices, these were struck with sufficient power by the dies that they left all design elements showing convincing detail, and showing clearly, unlike many 1859 Indian Cents where a few areas are left mushy. Pop 137; 24 finer, 2 in 65+, 21 in 66, 1 in 66+ (PCGS # 2052) .

1862. PCGS graded Proof 64+. CAC Approved. A lovely Brilliant Proof example with a hint of delicate pinkish color. A few minor fly-specks that are hardly worthy of mention. Only 550 struck (PCGS # 2259) .

1862 Transcontinental Railroad Bill: An Illinois railroad lawyer invested in land in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1857. To this day this piece of land is known as "Lincoln’s Hill." When he became president, one of Abraham Lincoln’s first official acts was to call a special session of Congress to begin work on the Pacific Railway Act that would provide railroad corporations with government subsidies while they built a transcontinental railroad line. When Congress finally passed the bill in 1862, it gave the president the right to decide the eastern terminus of the line. Lincoln chose Council Bluffs, Iowa. Some historians say it was a coincidence.

1863. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely golden toning. Beaming with originality. Indian cent production increased rapidly in 1862-64. Although the Philadelphia Mint struck very few small silver coins due to hoarding of silver, it is not quite accurate to say that silver did not circulate at all during the Civil War and afterward. The general rule was that all prices charged to consumers were in greenbacks (or shinplasters), but small silver coins could be given paper values for transactions. For example, during this inflationary period, depending upon the premium, a half dollar might have passed for anywhere from sixty to ninety cents. Today, although silver no longer circulates, any old silver half dollar commands sometimes 10x, 15x, or even 20x face value when converted into Federal Reserve currency (dollar units of account) (PCGS # 2067) .
Estimated Value $280 - 300.

1873. Open 3. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. Mostly red. A popular date. Prior to 1861, the U.S. had a bimetallic system where both gold and silver were money. In 1873, Congress decided to demonetize silver, and from the time that hard money was resumed (1879) to 1933, America was on the gold standard. The Indian Cent continued in its final French bronze alloy, which at the time was a blend of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. S-7. MPD on Neck. (PCGS # 2108) .
Estimated Value $400 - 450.

1875. NGC graded Proof 65 Red. Mostly untoned. Only 700 minted. Gleaming and original, yet basically coppery bright in appearance mellowed only by the reflective nature of the surface which doesn’t impart the more formidable "red" color of a frosty BU Gem. The few wispy hairlines do not detract from the overall pleasing eye appeal of this scarce 1875 Proof. Unlike the general run of circulation strikes of this caliber, the strike is thoroughly convincing in all places, even where some weakness is usually expected at the feather tips and the wreath’s bow. Pop 7; none finer at NGC.

1908-S. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Light golden-tan with mint red color. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Struck with technical exactness throughout. The 1908-S tends to be better made on average than the rarer 1909-S. Pop 215; 38 finer, 2 in 65+, 36 in 66. (PCGS # 2234) .

The 1908-S would likely gain more attention were it not for the 1909-S. What seems clear is that the 1909-S Indian Head Cent has garnered a lot of attention, but not for its historic connotations the way the 1908-S has. Considering the mintage one-quarter that of the 1908-S, is it any wonder the 1909-S, the key San Francisco Indian Head Cent, effectively leaves the 1908-S as a forgotten second cousin and what collectors call a semi-key cent.
