Kingdom of Parthia. Gotarzes II, AD 40-51. AR (Billon) Tetradrachm (14.60 g) minted at Seleukia, c. AD 47. Bareheaded bust left of Gotarzes II wearing diadem. Reverse: King enthroned right, receiving diadem from Tyche holding cornucopiae. Sellwood 65. Extremely Fine.

Parthian tetradrachms of this period display the year on the reverse in the upper central field, here "HNT". The Parthians emplyed the Seleukid era, and even included the month (second line under exergue; off the flan on this example). I well remember my paternal grandfather, cowboy at age 14, raconteur and welder, cautioning, "Watch out for coins saying 30 BC," then laughing and laughing.

Well-struck gold coins of the Sasanians are rarely encountered. This reverse type, without the two attendants, harkens to earlier kings.

Not your usual helmeted tetradrachm of Eukratides of Baktria! The portrait is less idealistic and the garb more decorated, besides the medallic aspects of the coin. A numismatic prize.

Ardoxsho was the goddess of prosperity and, for a time, identified with Pharro.

The recent hoard of Ptolemy III and IV gold coins has brought greater attention to this impressive series. This present denomination, struck under Ptolemy I, portrays one of Alexander's founding generals. The Greek letter delta is believed to be an artist's initial and is commonly seen on the silver tetradrachms of this period.

Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Berenike II, wife of Ptolemy III, 246-222/1 BC. Gold Pentadrachm (21.38 g) minted at Alexandria. Diademed and veiled bust right of Berenike II, wearing necklace. Reverse: Cornucopiae bound with fillet; on either side, star; beneath, monogram resembling Christogram. Svoronos 962 (plate xxix, 17). Very rare. A few scattered marks, none too serious and still Extremely Fine.

This variant was known to Svoronos from only one specimen. It was a highlight of the Consul Weber Collection, which was auctioned in 1909.

Reverse: Zeus Lykaios enthroned left holding eagle; before, thymiaterion. NGC graded Fine; Strike 5/5; Surface 2/5; Polished. We would describe this rare coin type as having been sweated from a mount; otherwise, VF or better details. BMC 116; Naville 83; SNG Cop 1209 (possibly same dies).

This gold issue was payment to the Macedonian forces to protect the semi-autonomous nature of Kyrene, center for the valuable silphium trade.

This gold coin was struck under the first pagan king of Ethiopia; later, the kingdom was converted to Christianity around the time of Constantine the Great, c. AD 330. The reverse legend translates to "Endubis, King of the Aksumites. Man of Dakhu".
