Chamberlain, Neville (1869-1940) Prime minister of Great Britain (1937-1949), best known for his appeasement policy toward Nazi Germany; he signed the Munich Accord with Hitler on Sept. 29, 1938, which conceded the Sudetenland area of Czechoslovakia. Historic Autograph Note Signed "Neville," one page, 6¼ x 5 in., Oct. 2, 1938. Written to powerful newspaper baron Max Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook (1879-1964) three days after Chamberlain had traveled to Munich and signed the agreement with Hitler which was supposed to bring "peace in our time." Chamberlain writes, "My dear Max, Your note gave me great pleasure. Thank you. Yours ever Neville." The note paper, which is engraved "Chequers / Butler's Cross Aylesbury / Bucks," has a couple of small holes in blank areas and is backed by a white sheet of paper.

According to A.J.P. Taylor's biography of Lord Beaverbrook, Beaverbrook had written Chamberlain on September 28, saying "My dear Neville, My faith is very great, but not so immense as my joy and delight over your reward…." (p. 385)
On September 30, the headline of Beaverbrook's The Daily Express read, "Britain will not be involved in a European war this year, or next year either." On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland and on September 3, Britain declared war on Germany.

Lenin (Vladimir Illich Ulyanov) (1870-1924) Russian revolutionary, founder of Bolshevism, and the moving force behind the October Revolution (1917). Autograph Letter, 2pp, in Russian, 6¾ x 4¼ in., n.p., c. Aug. 1915. Being a draft to an unknown correspondent, discussing preparations for the Zimmerwald conference, an international socialist conference which took place in Zimmerwald, Switzerland, September 5-8, 1915, and was attended by some 38 delegates from twelve European countries. Lenin represented the revolutionary socialists (communists) and Robert Grimm led the centrist-leaning (social democrats) socialists.

Lenin criticized the pacifist tone of the Manifesto and the absence of means for opposing World War I. A few of Lenin's comments are: "[the manifesto]…is weak, almost 'Trotskyite.' It contains no word about the fight against 'chauvinism'….or opportunism….so we have a battle on our hands,….we should get 4 votes: Norway, Sweden, …., and possibly the Poles and the Dutch."

Due to his participation in the conference, Lenin gained an international group of contacts and his writings became more widely known in various languages. This is an important document laying the foundation for revolution and the establishment of the Communist Party.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.

Santa Anna, Antonio Lopez de and Anastacio Bustamante. Manuscript Document Signed by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (1794-1876), as general, and Anastacio Bustamante (1780-1853), as Vice President of Mexico, 1½ pp (one sheet recto/verso) with integral leaf, Xalapa, Oct. 29, 1829. Written to Vicente Guerreo (1782-1831), who was President of Mexico from April-December of 1829, when he was betrayed by Bustamante and executed. The document regards a manifesto to be published in the newspapers.

Guerrero was of mixed Spanish, Amerindian, and African descent. The state of Guerrero was named after him. Bustamente would serve as president three times and Santa Anna five times. All three men were revolutionary generals. In 1829, Santa Anna was the hero of the new Mexican republic for defeating Spain in its final attempt to retake Mexico. In 1833 he would become president for the first time and in 1836 would gain a place in infamy in American history for leading a 13-day assault on the Alamo, which left all but two defenders dead.
