1905 Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar. NGC graded MS-66+. Nice light golden toning on both sides. Some minor discoloration on the obverse cheek, though in the end it is a sparkling Gem of the optimum quality and visual impact for this actively collected Gold Commemorative design. Intense cartwheel luster blends effortlessly with shimmering golden highlights on the satin surfaces.

Engraved by Charles E. Barber and struck for the exposition. The Lewis and Clark Dollar honored the Corps of Discovery which explored the Northwest at the behest of President Jefferson. Lewis and Clark started their journey up the Missouri River and had reached the far northwest at Fort Vancouver on their journeys of 1804 and 1806, but few private explorers had dared to follow this perilous route. The coins commemorating this exploration were sold for between $2.00 and $2.50 apiece, with the proceeds earmarked for completion of the bronze memorial to Sacagawea, part-time guide and full-time interpreter between the Corps of Discovery and the Indian tribes. Mintage figures show 10,025 dated 1904 and 10,041 dated 1905. Pop 1; 3 finer in 67 (PCGS # 7448) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

1915-S $50 Octagonal Pan Pac. NGC graded MS-64. Only 645 pieces struck. Light golden toning. Very choice for the grade, with the fields displaying smooth almost velvet-like surfaces from the way the dies were prepared. The trendy effect was new and innovative in those days and it shows its finest here on these large format $50 coins. The Mint Act of January 16, 1915 authorized a fifty dollar gold piece along with a gold $1, a gold quarter eagle, and a silver half dollar to commemorate the Panama-Pacific International Exposition scheduled to open in San Francisco that year. Proceeds from sale of the commemorative coins would be used to defray the cost of exposition. Several events are commemorated, including the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.

Both $50 gold pieces were the achievement of Robert Aitken. Since nearly all went to wealthy individuals who were not necessarily coin collectors, a fair number of the coin were handled (or even mishandled) by their owners or heirs. With this in mind, is it any wonder why so few Choice examples of the octagonal motif survive today? A significant number were cleaned. This lovely MS63 is a perfect selection to represent the Octabonal $50 format. The coin displays beautiful soft golden color and radiates a pure satiny luster. No observable blemishes are reported, making this an impressive specimen for the well-heeled numismatist; one of the most desirable issues in the U.S. Commemorative series.

Note:). On the octagonal issue and only on this issue, there appear 8 sporting dolphins around the inner margin at the 8 corners on either side.
Estimated Value $55,000 - 60,000.

1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold $2.50. NGC graded MS-66. CAC Approved. In an old holder. Well struck and frosty. A spectacular untoned example displaying luster that is so fresh it is as though it has fallen from the coining dies mere moments ago. For the $2.50 Pan-Pacific, the artist proposed an unusual motif of Columbia seated on a mythological hippocampus, half-horse, half-sea serpent. The eagle is rendered in a new, powerful way not seen before on an American production coin. It was modeled upon a similar design from one of the rare Pattern issues some years before. Pop 501; 114 finer in 67 .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold $2.50. PCGS graded MS-65. A frosty mint gem with a hint of natural tone. This offering is one of more attractive coins available. The presentation of this piece is amazing. Surfaces are exceptionally clean, with no toning spots or significant marks, indicating the piece has been carefully treasured and protected for nearly a century. Sharply struck, lustrous surfaces gleam with a vivid frosty golden patina. Though $2.50 Pan-Pacifics are not uncommon in auction offerings, in this state of preservation the coin is extremely desirable. A beautiful example of an historic issue and one that is truly a "numismatic treat" whose next owner will find it highlights his Commemorative gold collection (PCGS # 7450) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. CAC Approved. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A frosty gem example with lovely gold toning. Only 15,000 pieces struck. The 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition was held at a time in our nation's history when the art world was casting off the constriction of its dull, Victorian ways. All manner of modernistic designs were tried on coinage. Coins struck for the exposition, like the Gold Dollar offered here, catch the essence of this revolution. As an alternative to perfectly balanced devices, Charles Keck, the coin's creator, set his Panama Canal workman off to one side. Opposite the portrait, two concentric arcs give identify the issuer. The reverse maintain the trend and is a far cry from anything attempted before in American numismatics. A pair of dolphins frolic above and below the central denomination eliciting a happy feel to the artist's trim design. Pop 734; 48 finer in 67 (PCGS # 7449) .

1926 Sesquicentennial Gold $2.50. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. Well struck with lovely golden toning. Bright gold color erupts from original surfaces untouched by heavy toning. A strong strike as well, making this an advantageous coin for the focused collector. A dullish impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck some Sesqui $2.50 gold pieces, although, we're pleased to see and report that this Gem is a splendid exception to that rule.
