Lot 901
1866 Shield Nickel With Rays. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. Appealing steel grey color with subtle underlying golden hues. A showy Gem Proof of the first year Shield Nickel with a cocktail of underlying reflective surface, frosty to satiny on the devices, and originality that breathes scorching life into the entire composition. Need we say more? Why yes! -- a number of other things, including the fact the devices are struck razor-sharp with crisp details aplenty. Only 600 + Proofs struck. Pop 24; 32 finer, 29 in 66, 3 in 67 (PCGS # 83817) .
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,600.

This highly lustrous and largely brilliant "V" nickel displays full Proof mirrors on both sides. Razor-sharp and "as struck," with just outstanding detail in the stars and waves of hair, along with all the fine detail showing in the wreath. Superb! Pop 21; 2 better in 68.

1912-D Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-66. A well struck steel-blue gem. This highly pleasing coin displays a nuance of the natural coloration one likes to see on both sides of a Liberty nickel. Best of all everything is underpinned by full satin freshness. A note about the strike, this '12-D was struck much sharper than average from dies that imported their smooth, relaxed texture, especially in the fields. Pop 28; none finer (PCGS # 3874) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.

1912-S Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. Attractive multi-colored toning graces both sides. Only 238,000 pieces struck of which 5,000 are estimated to have survived. A peculiarly fitting fresh toned specimen, nicely struck, and unmarred by either spotting or contact marks. Quite difficult to encounter in this nice a grade showing full mint bloom. No more than the luster comes a desirable strike. This piece is struck with scientific exactness throughout and is one of the best made 1912-S nickels we have seen. (A fair portion of the issue was poorly struck.) Deserves a very strong bid. A key date Liberty Nickel. Pop 86; 8 finer in 66 (PCGS # 3875) .

Lot 909
1913 Buffalo Nickel. Type 1. NGC graded MS-68. Star. Wonderful rainbow toning on both sides. Almost incredible light electric blue and magenta toning with some splashes of gold, over a highly lustrous surface. A more artistic example cannot be imagined. Although the 1913 Type I nickel is readily available in all grades, including choice Mint State, at the certified MS-68 level it becomes exceedingly rare indeed. As stated, the present piece is fantastic!

James Earle Fraser had made numerous studies of Native Americans before undertaking the task of creating an Indian head for the nickel. The obverse portrays a mature warrior facing right. His hair is braided in the style of the plains Indians with a ribbon securing the braid. Two feathers are affixed near the part of the hair, and a third one is only partly visible. The garment across his shoulder provides a foundation for the coin's date, and Fraser's initial letter 'F' appears below the date. On both the original model and the struck coin, the subject appears to be in a contemplative state with eyes half closed. (For a detailed account of this fascinating coin, see David W. Lange's The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels. Pop 3; none finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.

1913 Buffalo Nickel. Type 1. PCGS graded MS-66. Natural golden toning with splashes of nickel-blue. Both the strike and satiny luster on this popular Buffalo one-year Type coin are simply outstanding, and only the presence of a few scattered abrasions precludes a Superb 67 rating (PCGS # 3915) .

1913-D Buffalo Nickel. Type 2. PCGS graded MS-66. A satiny gem. A really, really satiny gem. Supple underlying luster is enveloped in lovely nickel blue to russet-gold toning iridescence. This pleasing MS66 example of the Type 2 first year date is completely struck, in fact, bold throughout. The detail in the head, horn, and shoulder area of the reverse bison that designer Fraser's is among the finest recorded. Pop 49; 10 finer (PCGS # 3922) .

1914-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. A pristine well struck gem with hints of delicate pastel toning. A Premium Quality example. Any collector of this series who thinks that all '14-S nickels come poorly made hasn't seen this fresh gem. The details are full and well impressed, however weak the rest of the competition may be. This is a lovely MS66 that PCGS has certified, and the closest competitor is a Mint State 67 we can picture. Besides a full strike, the coin offers the viewer and critical buyer iridescent nickel-gray sheen in the highlights. The next owner of this '14-S will be acquiring full bragging rights! 1917-D Buffalo Nickel. NGC graded MS-64 PQ. Lustrous, mint-frosty surfaces put on a show with their rich pale silver-gray to nickel-sheen iridescence, the overall appearance greatly reinforced by strong luster. Lot 920
1920-D Buffalo Nickel. NGC graded MS-65. Well struck with lovely uniform light golden toning. The 1920-D Buffalo while an obtainable issue in Mint State grade, has the propensity for poorly struck coins. That makes it a challenge as a Gem MS65. The attractive coin to be sold here displays uncommon sharpness with full horn and split tail visible. Also highlighted are splashes of appealing natural toning. One would have to reject many lesser pieces to find a comparable '20-D Buffalo nickel. Pop 27; 1 in 66, 2 in 67.

Lot 921
1925-S Buffalo Nickel. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely multicolor toning includes shimmering nickel-blue iridescence on either side. How else to describe what is a glistening gem of this extraordinarily elusive '25-S issue, a coin with luster that practically flies off the surface! The luster with the color enhances the unexpectedly beautiful eye appeal of the coin. Next we turn to describe the strike. And what we find is almost impossible to find on a 1925-S nickel: mathematically exact standards seen in the sharp centers, making this date noteworthy since "average" detail in the key high points (a catch-phrase for "miserable" or "as solid as pudding") is, sad to say, the norm. Expect a lot of competition here when bidding begins. Pop 22; 2 finer in 66.

1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legs. PCGS graded MS-63. Fully lustrous with a hint of light toning. Level, rolling luster covers both sides with splashes of rich nickel brilliance giving surfaces a splendid appearance. Spot-free. Scarce. Prized in Mint condition. Pop 253 (PCGS # 3982) .

Lot 926
1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legs. NGC graded AU-58 PQ. Claims to a MS grade, there is luster aplenty atop spot-free fields. Devices show the usual blunt look of a 1937-D 3-leg nickel. Coins were struck from a worn and lapped die. The lapping (to remove die clash marks?) had the unintended consequence of removing the foreleg of the bison, leaving behind its hoof only.
