China. Tibet T'Ung Chih. Fantasy Gold 25 Tael, Year 10 (1871). KM-Bruce X#M470. 49 mm. Smiling Buddha seated on lotus flower facing. Reverse; Two Imperial flying dragons in pursuit of a fireball, EMPIRE OF CHINA above. The five Chinese characters at lower rim indicate that it is 5 Taels (Wu Liang Jin) of pure gold, but English inscription indicates the value to be 25 Taels. Very Rare Private Issue. Not listed in Kann. An exact type has been sold in 1971 from Eduard Kann Collection Sale, Lot 1167.

A curious piece part of a group of gold issues struck in denominations of 25 and 50 taels, this fantasy medal, along with the rest of its series, have possessed a mysterious origin for nearly a century. This coin was probably struck in Shanghai Merchants association, with official sanction of the Imperial Chinese Government in an attempt to bolster the sagging economic condition of the Government.
