Brewer Family Archive. Charles Brewer (1804 - 1885) Born to Moses and Abigail May Brewer and descended from a Brahmin Boston family with roots back to the Mayflower. Founder of C. Brewer & Co., Ltd. the oldest surviving company in Hawaii. One of the Big Five families that controlled Hawaii's economy until the 1950's. An extensive collection of Brewer Family documents and letters. Approximately 35-40 pieces.

This lot contains seven letters dating from 1825-1876 and one from 1920 regarding various subjects, including real estate transactions, patents, the Brewer family genealogy and personal family matters. Among the items: the Brewer family genealogy plus addendum; a Prospectus for joining the Puritan Registry and letter dated 1931 regarding same; a memo and receipt for passage; real estate transactions and land documents dating from 1818 to 1916, including quitclaim deeds, mortgages, property deeds, promissory notes; three maritime account sales between Charles Brewer and James Hunnewell dated 1869. Charles Brewer's Last Will & Testament dated 1877; 1861 real estate transaction between Brewer and Lot Kamehameha relative to premises on the corner of Fort and Hotel Streets, Honolulu, Hawaii; 1861 lease by Samuel Savidge of the Stone building on Fort Street, Honolulu, Hawaii Brewer; 1895 letter to Charles Brewer from A. F. Judd regarding payment of claims from crew members of the whaling Bark "Arctic" which was lost in the Arctic ice. Condition fair to fine. Should be seen personally to be fully appreciated.

Kamehameha III. - Royal Land Grant No. 239 (1814-54) King of Hawaii (1825-54); brother of Liholiho, who ruled as Kamehameha II. Royal document half in English and half in Hawaiian with substantial inclusions in Hawaiian, 13½ x 16¼ in., 1850, March 26, 4 pp. Transaction with Peter J. Gulick relative to land at Kamananui, Waialua, Oahu, Hawaii. Gaspar Sylva document collection. Signed by the following: Kamehameha III; Peter J. Gulick (Peter Johnson Gulick was missionary and father to Orramel H. Gulick and John Thomas Gulick and uncle to Charles T. Gulick); and Keoni Ana (John Young II) as Minister of the Interior. Keoni Ana was the son of John Young and chiefess Kaonaeha. He succeeded Kekauluoki as Prime Minister, 1845-1854, and also served at various times as governor of Maui, Minister of the Interior and of the Supreme Court. Emma, Queen (Kekelaokalani) (1836-85) Consort of Kamehameha IV; known for her humanitarian work. Manuscript bust portrait order signed by Queen Emma with the name "Kekelaokalani," 7¾ x 5 in., Honolulu, 1876, June 27, 1p. An order for $75, drawn to Eiles Jürgensen for a bust portrait of herself. Fine. Emma took the name Kekelaokalani in 1862 after the death of her four-year-old son; the name means "flight of the heavenly chiefs." Emma was instrumental in raising funds for a hospital to treat the native population; it was named "Queen's"after her. She was fluent in Hawaiian and English and much loved by her people. She was considered as a candidate as the new ruler of Hawaii when her husband died, but the Hawaiian legislature selected David Kalakaua.

Extremely rare document signed ("R. Keelikolani") as Govenor of the Island of Hawaii. 13 x 16½ in., 1855, May 2, 4 pp. A very early island of Hawaii judiciary organizational document, dating from the first days of the monarchy's justice system. Also signed by G.M. Robinson, Supreme Court Justice. Princess Ruth signatures, especially those when she was governor of the Island of Hawaii, are extremely rare. Liliuokalani (as Princess Regent) (1838-1917) Last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian islands (1891-93). In 1893 she was deposed by a group of American businessmen led by Sanford Dole, and in 1898, Hawaii was annexed to the United States. Document signed by Liliuokalani as Princess Regent during the reign of Kalakaua and by H.A. Carter, the Minister of the Interior, 16 x 20 in., Honolulu, 1881, 4 pp. Royal Land Deed - Patent No. 532, regarding land in the historically important village of Kaawaloa, South Kona, Island of Hawaii. Kaawaloa was the famous site of Captain Cook's first landing and eventual murder on the shore of Kealekekua. Contains Royal Green Blind Impressed Seal, as well as two 50 cents Duty Stamps. Signatures of Liliuokalani when she was queen are very rare, excessively so when she was younger and Princess Regent. Fine.

Lilioukalani, Queen. Letter written by a secretary for Lili'uokalani showing her anger towards the man who attacked her brother, King Kalakaua in the press, 10 x 6¼ in., c. 1880. In part: "The man who wrote this burlesque was a Dr. Purvis (a part Indian) who was Vice Chamberlain to His Majesty Kalakaua. Purvis being in poor circumstances was glad to get this means to save him from hunger…." Accompanied by two satirical poems, 2 pp. each (one with worm holes but legible), similar to the "Gynbergballads" against Lili'uokalani's brother King Kalakaua, but slandering various members of the King's cabinet and the royal family; one is entitled "The Invitation & The Snub." Edward Purvis was a British army officer who had served in India before moving to the Sandwich Islands for health reasons.

Two Hawaiian Monarchy Land Deeds. One document is 12½ x 8 in., 1883, March 24, 4 pp., being a transaction with John D. Paris, Jr. relative to land in South Kona, Island of Hawaii. Includes 4 cancelled $1.00 Hawaiian government duty stamps. Fine with slight foxing. Paris was elected to the Territorial Legislature in 1887 and was a member of the Reform. With a Hawaiian monarchy land mortgage deed 12½ x 8 in., 1888, June 25, 5 pp., being a transaction with D. S. Kaui and Mrs. S. Robertson relative to land in Omokaa (Royal Patent 3434), Kona, Island of Hawaii. Among the signatories are Thomas G. Thrum, A., Charles Gulick, and William R. Castle. Thrum issued the first Hawaiian Almanac and Annual in 1875; he was a leading writer on Hawaiian archaeology and folklore. Gulick was a prominent businessman and one of the few missionary sons holding royalist sympathies. William R. Castle was Attorney General of the Kingdom of Hawaii from February to November, 1876. Fine.

1856 and 1866 Honolulu Documents Signed by Missionary Asa Thurston. Two documents regarding land at Pualoalo, Honolulu, Hawaii, both documents 12½ x 8 in. One is dated 1856, December 17 and the other 1866, December 18. Both documents have Royal Stamp (Green). Fine. Asa Thurston and his wife Lucy came to Hawaii in 1820 as part of the First Company selected by the Mission to work in Hawaii. He was one of the leading translators of the Bible into Hawaiian.

Chamberlain was a member of the Second Company of American missionaries that arrived in Honolulu in 1823. Smith served as sheriff of Kauai and Maui, was in the Hawaiian Legislature and served as Attorney General and President of the Board of Health. Hartwell was a Justice of the Supreme Court from 1868-1874. Brown served as Attorney General under the Hawaiian monarchy and was often called upon to advise King Kalakaua.

This is for a storehouse at the corner of Queen and Nuuanu Streets, Honolulu. Signed by Richardson, Reynolds, C.F. Hussey, Ashur Bates and W.A. Cooper. Stephen Reynolds was a towering figure in early Hawaiian business and trade. Minor staining and one partial fold separation.

Hawaiian Monarchy Kalihi Mortgage Deed. 14 x 8 in., 1887, March 15, 8 pp. Transaction with Oswald relative to land in Kalihi, District of Kona, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. Handwritten manuscript in fine pen. Among the signatories is William C. Parke (who was appointed Marshall of the Hawaiian Islands by King Kamehameha III around 1850 and served in that capacity until 1884 when he was asked to resign for political reasons by King Kalakaua). Property was subsequently sold to Victoria Ward in 1895 and finally to Charles E. Coe in 1897. Includes 5 cancelled $1.00 Hawaiian government duty stamps. Fine.

1866 and 1869 Hawaiian Language Land Documents. Hawaiian monarchy Waikiki Beach real estate lease, 7¾ x 9¾ in., Honolulu, 1866. Manuscript document written entirely in the Hawaiian language. Contains the very rare blue royal stamp with the words "Hoailoua Paiokealii Royal Stamp" around outer edge of stamp with an image of the crown in the center. Also contains a blindstamp of the crown. Signed by G.F. Snow, Kaahumanu V. & Kekuanaoa, and M. Thomas Brown as Register of Conveyence. Fine. The second document is a transaction with Pinhasa Wood relative to land at Keoneula, Honolulu, Hawaii, 12¼ x 8 in., 1869, August, 4 pp. Written entirely in Hawaiian. Fine.

Hawaii (Maui) Whaling Logbook Dated June 1837 - March 1838. Handwritten log book covering the shipboard events of the American whaling ship "Oscar" during its Pacific voyage from June 1837 to March 1838, 12½ x 8 in., 20 pp. With newspaper clippings. In addition to latitude, longitude, weather conditions and shipboard life, the logbook has over 16 sperm-whale stamps. These stamps include full sperm-whale stamps of whales caught and tried out, stamps of sperm whale flukes of those whales lovered for but not caught. An interesting group of entries begins on October 8, 1837 and describes anchoring off the "Mowee" (Maui) of the village "Lahiney" (Lahaina). Toned and brittle with ragged edges affecting some words and some loose pages.

Whaling Ship Document - 1843. "List of Persons Composing the Crew of the 'Bark Elizabeth' of Freetown- Whereof Is Master Bradford W. Winslow Bound for Indian Ocean," 18½ x 13½ in., Freetown, 1843, 1p. With a list of 36 men, their places of birth, residence, age, height, complexion and hair. Most are from Freetown. Among the endorsements on the verso is a lengthy manuscript notation by the American Vice Consul in the Sandwich Isles certifying that some men have been discharged, listing their names, and that one man, J.H. Francis, had deserted. There was probably at least one black crewman, and there are others described as "dark", and one even "Copper" - this one from Society Island. Slight age toning. Fine.

Ruggles, Samuel - One of First Missionaries to Hawaii (1795-1871) A missionary with the first company to the Sandwich Islands; he established two missions there, including one at Waimea, Kauai and one at Hilo, Hawaii. Autograph letter from Langdon I. Ward, Treasurer of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, 8 x 5¼ in., Boston, 1867, Oct. 23, 2 pp. To Rev. A.L. Loomis regarding a monetary grant to Samuel Ruggles in recognition of missionary service in the Sandwich Islands from 1820 to 1834. An extremely rare letter regarding one of most important Hawaiian missionaries and his relationship with the organization which sent him to Hawaii. Rev. A.L. Loomis was apparently a descendent of Elisha Loomis (1799-1836), a missionary in the first company to Hawaii and responsible for the first printing in the Hawaiian language.

1858 Whaling Letter From Honolulu. Autograph letter on blue paper from James B. Robinson to Capt. H. W. Seabury in New Bedford, Mass., 10¾ x 8½ in., Honolulu, 1858, April 6, 1½ pp. Describing a voyage on the whaling ship Tahmaroo. In part: "Our cruise out south was unsuccessful. The whales were very scarce and shy. We left the 'New Zealand Ground'. and started for the 'Off Shore' where we cruised a month and took 84 Bbls sperm oil. Should have taken more… but unfortunately saw the whales to windward every time we raised them… The loss of the ship 'South Seaman' was very unexpected. The vessels that whaled on the coast of California last season done extremely well…quite a large fleet of whalers at the 'Islands' this spring. [will] continue on the voyage on my old cruising grounds." He appreciates Seabury's high opinion of his ship and crew and says he'll "try to merit the good opinion of our liberal minded owners in the future." Very good; few edge chips.

Percival, Captain John. Manuscript letter signed ("Percival") by Naval Captain John Percival, Commanding the U. S. S. Constitution, Honolulu, 1845, Nov. 30, 10 x 8 in., 1p. Informing Thomas Holdup Stevens, U.S. Naval Store Keeper at Honolulu, that he has ordered a replacement for an anchor and chain the ship had lost in a storm off Oahu on Oct. 28 and asking Stevens to draw a bill on the Navy Department for $350 and to forward the information to Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft. Stevens would distinguish himself in the Civil War and eventually attain the rank of Rear-Admiral.

Punahou Preparatory School report card of Walter Dillingham, one of the leading government ministers and business titans of 19th century Hawaii, 7½ x 5 in., Honolulu, for Winter Term, 1886. It shows that Dillingham was a fair student with perfect attendance. Punahou was founded and continues as one of the elite private schools in the United States - the first west of the Mississippi River. Presidential candidate, Barack Obama, attended Punahou from 1971 to 1979.

Extremely Rare Missionary Manuscript Letter. 12 x 7½ in., Napoopoo, Hawaii, 1860, June 14, 2 pp. Letter from William P. Simerson addressed to William R. Lawrence sent from Napoopoo "direct to Kealakeakua, Hawaii, Sandwich Islands". Simerson writes "…I have got a second wife Miss Victoria Thornton of English parentage. I still work at my trade masonry and no scarcity of work. I am the only mason on the island of Hawaii. I still have hopes of coming home some time in the future." Slightly soiled with minor marginal chipping.
