Lot 5193
1864, 3¢ Fractional Currency. Third Issue, light background to portrait. PCGS Very Choice New 64. . Fr-1226. . KL-3252. This fractional piece is one of about 100 pieces that were originally part of one lot in the 1964 Stack's sale of the George O. Walton Collection, famous for its inclusion of one of the five known 1913 Liberty Head Nickels. After Mr. Walton passed away in a car crash in 1963, his family was mistakenly told that the coin was fake. It sat in a closet in North Carolina for the next 40 years, only to reappear and be correctly authenticated at a coin convention after a reward for its reappearance was offered. This 3 cent piece, pedigreed to that same collection, is an attractive well-margined example.
Estimated Value $125 - 150.

1862, 5¢ Fractional Currency. First Issue, perforated edges, with ABCO monogram. PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ. . Fr-1228. . KL-3209. This with monogram perforated note has outstanding margins and centering for the issue, although it is limited in its technical grade by a light corner fold. This is an example where the eye appeal and market price is likely to surpass that of what the technical grade would typically demand. This piece, along with approximately 100 pieces here offered, was once part of the George O. Walton Collection, famous for the "missing" 1913 Liberty Head Nickel.

1862, 10¢ Fractional Currency. First Issue, perforated edges, with ABCO monogram. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64EPQ. . Fr-1240. . KL-3213. The margins usually come extremely tight on these early perforated notes, and this example is blessed with both better than average width of margins and centering. It is tight at the right, but is given an extra notch of eye appeal as the sheet selvage at the right past the perforations is attached.
