Lot 1209
Uruguay. Peso "Fuerte", 1844 (Montevideo). Eliz-1; WR-1; KM-5. 26.43 grams. Quartered arms of Uraguay, with rising sun at top, surrounded by wreath of oak. Reverse: Value within circle of nine stars. Sharp, full strike. A few light marks, otherwise surfaces are quite pristine. Fields softly lustrous to semi-reflective - with good cartwheel effect. Lightly toned. Rare in this state of preservation.

Occasionally some of these coins have been found to be overstruck on U.S. dollars and Latin American pesos. NGC graded MS-64.

Uruguay. Republic. Peso, 1870. Cf. WR-2 (not this date); KM-Pn25. 25.30 grams. Oval shield with arms of Uruguay, the rising sun at top, surrounded by wreath of laurel and olive, with banners and cannon behind. Reverse: Value within wreath of laurel and olive. Sharp, detailed strike on proof to proof-like fields. A few faint contact marks, otherwise surfaces are quite pristine. Light to medium russet toning.

Only two examples known, with this being the only example in private hands. NGC graded Proof 65.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.
Purchased in the 1960's from Bill Foster. Illustrated in Money of the World, coin 173.
