Lot 1764
1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze. PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown. A nice strike with some mint color still visable. Though the copper-nickel cents of 1859-64 did yeoman's duty in replacing the large, out-of-fashion cents struck prior to 1857, the mint had had enough with the problems of striking coins made out of the troublesome nickel alloy. This year, there were three cent varieties minted. The present example, the second to be struck, is on a 48 grain bronze planchet that replaced the heavier thick 72-grain copper-nickel pieces. Pop 21; none finer @ PCGS. (PCGS # 2077) .

1888/7 Indian Head Cent. . FS-010. NGC graded AU-50 Brown. Scarce variety. Popular red book variety. This important overdate Indian cent variety was discovered by James F. Ruddy and first publicized in Coin World in 1970. Since then, only a small number of pieces have ever been discovered, hence their growing popularity. A glossy coin like this deserves special mention since it is well within the Condition Census.

Note: crumbling of the die at the obverse rim at 9 o'clock may have led to die failure and early disposal of this overdate die.
