1857 N-3 R5- Small Date. PCGS graded Proof 64 Brown. Very attractive bluish steel brown with 15% of the slightly faded mint color remaining on the obverse, nearly half the faded red showing on the reverse. The obverse is virtually flawless and the only marks on the reverse are a small spot of slightly darker toning over the N in ONE and a thin nick under the N in CENT. The fields are nicely reflective, although the mirrors are not especially deep, as always on this proof-only variety. No hairlines or other defects. A premium example. EAC grade Proof-63 and tied for CC#3 honors behind two slightly finer examples in Denis Loring's census of Proof Large Cents.
