The Japanese Trade Dollar was only issued for three years (1875-1877). Its purpose was to compete with the Maria Theresa Talers then circulating widely in the Orient. As a unit of trade it was only moderately successful, as a numismatic item, it is the scarcest crown type in Japanese coinage and highly sought after.

Obverse features the draped bust of Paul I facing right, wearing Order and sash. Reverse: Plain cross with internal hatching. This medal is sometimes referred to as a pattern ruble. Struck on a slightly uneven flan (as is often the case) it remains one of the few available portrait pieces of this ill-fated ruler. About Extremely Fine.
