The Medici family, one of the leading families in Europe for over four hundred years, ends with Giovanni Gaston. He had no heirs and was unable to provide for his succession. Thus, in 1738, the Grand Duchy of Florence becomes attached to the House of Austria.

The kingdom of Italy was an artificial entity established by Napoleon as a buffer state against Austria. It consisted of Lombardy, Venetia, Modena, and Ancona of the Papal States. The actual ruler was Eugene de Beauharnais, stepson of Napoleon and viceroy of the kingdom.

Yet its position on the Adriatic allowed it to dominate trade with the East. As trade with the west through the Atlantic increased, Venice declined.
