Venice is a city that has had a far greater influence than its relatively small population. The city had only 60,000 inhabitants in its glory years with around 200,000 in the metropolitan area. Yet its position on the Adriatic allowed it to dominate trade with the East. As trade with the west through the Atlantic increased, Venice declined.
