Gounod, Charles (18-1893) French composer, most noted for his opera Faust. ALS ("Ch. Gounod") in pencil, 1p, in French, 9" x 7", Arcachon, 1881 Sept. 3. Fine. To the Duke d'Auniale, in part: "Well, if my memory serves me correctly, this makes the fifth time that Chantilly has declined! When we get to ten, we'll mark it with a cross…You a soldier, who knows…what it is to hope against all hope….Just hang on and we will have done with this evil imp which pursues me everywhere…."

(Musicians) Cadman, Hofmann, and Kindler. AMuQS Charles Wakefield Cadman,Josef Hofmann (1876-1957), and Hans Kindler (1892-1949). Cadman (1881-1946) wrote above his name, "From the land of the sky-blue water / With best wishes," 3¾" x 5¼". Hofmann wrote "Vivace!" above and added the date, "1933" below, on a 3¼" x 5" card. Kindler wrote "Bach Suite in C mnor" above and "for cello solo" below his musical quotation, on a 6" x 4½" album page; another hand noted the date as 7.27.33. Fine. (3 items).

Puccini, Giacomo (1858-1924) Italian operatic composer. Among his operas, most of which have tragic love themes, are Manot Lescaut (1893), La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), Madame Butterfly (1904), and La fanciulla del west (1910). AMuQS from Tosca, in black ink on a postcard illustrating a scene from Tosca and bearing a 1901 Italian postmark. The other side is addressed in Puccini's hand to Signor Pittore Delhermino in Florence. Very fine; minor toning; matted and double framed so that both sides are visible; frame has some damage at the lower edge and upper right edge, not affecting the postcard. The overall size is 13"x11¼". This is one of the premier Puccini musical quotations which are beoming increasingly scarce.

Stokowski, Leopold (1882-1977) British-American conductor known for his showmanship and popularization of classical music. TLS on personal letterhead, 1p, 4¾" x 8", New York, 1969 March 24. To Miss Sheila Keats, a piano accompanist and teacher at Juilliard, thanking her "for the great care and deep thought you give to your Program Notes. Also, for examining the history and roots from which grow the inspired music for the modern orchestra. I read your notes with great interest…." Very fine. With an IPS in the lower border, 8½" x 5½", n.p., n.d. Inscribed to Miss Keats. Inscription and signature on the photo are faint. Matted and framed to an overall size of 17" x 10¼".
