Churchill, Winston S. & Franklin D. Roosevelt. War-date Signatures as Prime Minister and President on a "War & Navy Departments V-Mail Service Official Business" envelope, 3¼" x 4¾", postmarked "U.S. Postal Service No. 1 / Dec 14 / 11AM / 1943," n.p., n.d. Boldly signed in black ink by both leaders. The envelope has overall toning and a few spots at lower edge. Churchill often visited the White House during the war, staying two and three weeks at a time. The two men met in person nine times, including two famous meetings with Joseph Stalin at Teheran and Yalta. The close relationship of Churchill and Roosevelt resulted in a degree of cooperation between the British and the Americans that was unprecedented.

Churchill, Winston S., Sir (1874-1975) English statesman, soldier, and author; Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War; winner of the 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature. Signed First Edition of Lord Randolph Churchill, 2 Volumes, London and New York: MacMillan and Co. Limited, 1906. 8¾" x 6". Three quarter binding; spine with raised edges and gilt lettering. Light toning and minor scattered foxing. Signed on a front end page of Volume I, "Inscribed by Winston S. Churchill 1947," n.p. Lord Randolph (1849-95) was Sir Winston's father and a British statesman.

Gladstone, William E (1809-98) British statesman and political reformer; Prime Minister (1868–1874, 1880–1885, 1886 and 1892–1894). Autograph Letter Signed "W Gladstone," 1½ pp (recto/verso), Hawarden N.W., 10 Nov. (18)56. To Messrs. MacArthur & Co., asking them to forward his thanks to Professor George Wilbur for "the very interesting work which you were good enough to forward to me on his behalf…." Fine except for a couple of penciled notations in another hand.

Mao Tse Tung (or Zedong) (1893-1976) Founder of the People's Republic of China; one of the most prominent Communist theoreticians. After a long civil war with Chinese nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-shek, Mao and the Communists took over most of mainland China in 1949. In 1966 Mao launched the Cultural Revolution to regain control of the party after his Great Leap Forward (1958) resulted in some 20 to 30 million people dying of famine and Mao's temporary withdrawal from power. During the Cultural Revolution, millions were persecuted, especially those with any taint of intellectualism, and as many as half a million people died. In 1969 Mao regained his party leadership and in 1970 was named supreme commander of China and the army.

Masaryk, Jan (1886-1948) Czech statesman; son of the first president. He served as ambassador to Britain (1925 to 1938), as foreign minister of the Czechoslovak provisional government in London (1940-45) and later Prague (1945-48). He died mysteriously, either from jumping or from being pushed from a window, two weeks after the Communist take-over. Photograph Inscribed and Signed, "To R.R. Gros with best wishes from Jan Masarek. S.F. June 1945" Very good; soiling in upper left background; light creasing at left margin.

Montague, Charles & Stephen Fox. Document Signed "Chas. Montague" as First Lord of the Treasury, and "Ste:Fox" as a Commissioner of the Treasury, 6¼" x 8¾", n.p., 1 Oct. 1699. Also signed by John Smith ("J Smith") as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ordering payment to Robert Cole, "his Ma[jes]ty's Agent and Consul at Algier…the sume of Three hundred pounds for halfe a year on his allowance…." Very good; some toning and soiling; penciled notes on recto and verso by an earlier owner. Montague was the first Earl of Halifax. He introduced the bill into Parliament establishing the Bank of England. Stephen Fox was with the royalist army at the Battle of Worcester and went into exile with Charles II. He served as intermediary between Charles II and General Monck and after the Restoration was appointed first Clerk of the Green Cloth and Paymaster of the Forces.

Mussolini, Benito (1883-1945) Fascist dictator of Italy (1922-45); executed by Italian partisans. 15" x 11¼" Photograph Inscribed and Signed: "Al Magg. Martin F. Scanlon / cordialmente / Roma / ott. '26 / Mussolini." Lower portion of photo has some restoration, including a repainted cuff; a few damp stains to mount, but very clearly and boldly signed.

Stalin, Joseph & Andrei Gromyko. Single-fold Card Signed by Joseph Stalin and Andrei Gromyko, in Cyrillic script, 3½" x 8", Moscow, 1949. Untranslated card, in Russian, bearing a 2¼" diameter black stamping on the left side. Fine; light toning; minor soiling to edges. Accompanied ay an unsigned glossy 7" x 5" print of Stalin seated at a table. Stalin (1879-1953) held the title of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and ruled as dictator from the late 1920s to his death in 1953. He led the Soviets to victory over Nazi Germany during World War II, but ordered the execution of millions of his own countrymen. In 1949, Gromyko (1909-89) was the Soviet Union's representative on the United Nations Security Council. He served as minister for Foreign Affairs for the Soviet Union from 1957 to 1985, then became Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, a largely ceremonial role.
