Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 5341
1928, $10 Gold Certificate. . Fr-2400. . KL-1963. PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ. A boldly original note near gem quality. The original obligation for Gold Certificates reads: This certifies that there have been deposited in the Treasury of The United States of America Ten Dollars in coin payable to the bearer on demand. This certificate is a legal tender in the amount thereof in payment of all debts and dues public and private. Technically, the gold was the "dollars" and the paper note a money substitute. Later, in 1933-34, in an ages old slight-of-hand magician's trick, the government switched the money substitute for the thing itself.
Estimated Value $550 - 650.

Lot 5345
1928, $50 Gold Certificate. . Fr-2404*. . KL-2525*. CGC Fine 15. About 12 exist. Extremely rare as a "star" replacement note. The use of a star as a prefix, on notes that replaced defective notes discovered at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing during inspection, began in 1910 with block. The system continued with the use of a solid star (*), which was applied to small-size notes, 1928-present. This Gold Certificate employs the star as the prefix; Federal Reserve Notes use it as the suffix.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Lot 5346
Fr-2405*. 1928, $100 Gold Certificate. . Fr-2405*. . KL-2747*. PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20, Stain on Back. Star Note $100 Gold Certificates are rare in any grade, and nice Very Fines are few and far between. This one has a light vertical stain on the back that looks like it was caused by a rubber band; if this is the case it might be a candidate for some careful conservation. In any case, this is a rare note that should be popular with collectors and dealers alike.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.
The Brooklyn Collection.
