This beauty boasts of a full strike with intense frosty mint luster and rich yellow gold in color. This coin has been resting in a private coin collection for decades and has just now been sent to PCGS for certification. This is a discovery coin and is the only Mint State coin certified by PCGS. NGC reports only 1 coin at the Mint State level as MS-62. We would love to match this coin up with the NGC specimen as we feel this coin is of Premium Quality for the designated grade. Lot 985
1862 $10 Liberty. Proof 64 Cameo. A wonderful example, in fact, incredible! The surfaces are a warm yellow gold with all the devices nice and frosty. The mirror fields are watery, slighty dished and fully mirrored. A few trivial marks scattered about along with a reverse scratch near the D in TEN D (possibly present during minting), a good diagnostic reference for future identification. The proof mintage for this year was a mere 35 pieces with probably fewer than half that amount actually delivered. The best estimates today are that perhaps a dozen or so are known of which two are ensconced in institutions, the Smithsonian and the American Numismatic Society. As far as choice proof examples are known, this coin is in an elite class with six others. PCGS reports 6 in this grade with none higher. Removed from its "slab" this coin is accompanied by a PCGS tag as PR-64 Cameo (PCGS # 8798) .
Estimated Value $40,000 - 45,000.

1866-S $10 Liberty. With motto. NGC graded AU-50. A pleasing example of this very elusive issue exhibiting a warm golden glow. Only 11,500 coins were struck. "Prohibitively rare in EF" writes Walter Breen and thus an important offering that should attract bidder attention. NGC reports 14 at this level with 8 in AU-53, 6 in AU-55 and 2 in AU-58. Undoubtedly, these numbers include multiple submissions of the same coin.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

1868-S $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Well struck for the issue. The surfaces are relatively clean for such a large coin, though we note a circulation mark on the lower part of the bust. This specimen is uncleaned having color that is pale golden orange with attractive light tone. Breen-6957, "prohibitively rare above VF." Pop 19 with 13 in AU-58. No mint state examples have been graded by either service.

Lot 988
1868-S $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. This reconstruction era date/mint combination has a low mintage of only 13,500. This usually weakly struck issue shows only slight softness on the high points. Circulation marks as one would expect for the grade. Bright yellow gold color with some light peach tone within protected areas. Breen-6957, "Very rare (and) prohibitively rare above VF." From about the mid-1850s to the end of the 1870s, the mintages of gold eagles were, with an exception or two, quite low. For the collector interested in US gold, concentration within this quarter century would provide quite a challenge and great fun during the quest. Pop 19, with 13 in AU-58. No mint state examples has been graded by either service.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

1871-CC $10 Liberty. ANACS graded EF-45. A decent strike with plenty of detail still present. Honey color gold in appearance with light to moderate abrasions. Traces of original mint luster still adheres to the protected areas about the devices. Only 8085 pieces were struck, as with other early Carson City mint issues, they circulated mainly in the region and saw heavy usage. Of the surviving examples, nearly all are in much lower grade, in fact, the Elisaberg specimen was EF-40.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.

1874-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. The CC mintmark is lightly struck as normally seen with this issue, though full and visible. The color is very pale orange gold. Mintage of only 16,767. Breen-6979, "Prohibitively rare above VF." The present specimen is considerably above VF and would seem to provide an unusual opportunity for the Carson City specialist or date collector. This usually weakly struck issue is somewhat above average as the strike is fairly decent, with only a bit of softness above the brow and on the lower portions of the eagle on the reverse. The color is a soft orangy yellow gold having been gently washed at some time in the past. Breen-6981, "prohibitively rare" (above VF). Pop 5, with 2 in 55, 1 in 58, 1 in 60 and 1 in 63 (PCGS # 8673) .
