Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 757
1825 $2.50 Capped Head. Sharpness of AU-55. The planchet is slightly uneven. Probably cleaned long ago, now a pleasing golden-orange with some light hairlines on both sides. An important type coin and always in great demand as the larger diameter of the Capped Head to Left design. A mere 4,434 were struck this year and less than 15,000 coins were struck for the entire type (1821 thru 1827) (PCGS # 7664) .

This is the more common of the two known varieties. A small number of Mint State coins survive from the original mintage of 17,781, as NGC has reported 18 in this grade with 19 in MS-62, 12 in MS-63 and 5 in MS-64. A most desirable specimen that should stir considerable bidder interest (PCGS # 7701) .

1840-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. A wonderful well struck and intensely lustrous example struck in natural greenish-yellow gold. A truly notable specimen of an issue when seen is usually well worn or full of striking problems. This little treasure certainly ranks among the finest known pieces. In fact, Douglas Winter's Condition Census includes just two pieces at the mint state level. NGC reports 5 in this grade with 1 in MS-62 and 3 in MS-63 (PCGS # 7718) .

1843-C $2.50 Liberty. Small date, crosslet 4. Sharpness of MS-60 plus. A splendid example of one of the rarest and most interesting $2.50 in the series. "Interesting" because of the die bulge at the point of the bust as struck and always seen on this variety. This bulge was probably the reason the die was retired after only 2,988 were coined. Boldly struck with flashy semi reflective surfaces that tend to accentuate some hairlines and minor marks. A delightful little jewel in honey color gold with a slight greenish cast. A very rare coin that sits high within the condition census (PCGS # 7729) .

1844-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Nicely struck fror the date, with a low mintage run of only 11,622. Breen-6175, with large C mintmark. Commenting on the rarity, that author mentions that this date is "usually (seen) F-VF" and that it is "prohibitively rare AU". He further interestingly reports that the minting process was "interrupted because a burglar raided and burned down the mint building during the night of July 27, 1844." As a result, minting was not resumed until early in 1846. We wonder if this coin might have been one of those grabbed by that pre-Civil War second story man. Just an obsessive die variety specialist perhaps? Pop 7 with 28 finer.

1862-S $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. A well struck and strictly uncirculated example with warm rich golden color. The lustrous surfaces are somewhat prooflike which gives this little treasure plenty of "flash." This remarkable example will certainly leave a lasting impression in the memories of date collectors of this series. San Francisco mint quarter eagles from the Civil War era and before are quite rare in grades above Extremely Fine. They are so elusive in fact, that it can be years between offerings. This denomination was not used in large bullion transactions, such as were $20 pieces and therefore saw extensive use in everyday commerce. PCGS reports 2 at this level with only 1 better by a point.
