U.S. Gold $10 Bust & Liberty 1797-1865

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2322
1797 Large $5 Capped Bust. Taraszka-12, Breen-2C, Rarity-4. PCGS graded AU-58. Choice and original early Capped Bust, Heraldic Eagle issues are by no means easy to come by and the present offering should excite all of those who search high and low for top quality early gold coinage. Rich yellow gold surfaces display mint frost and smooth, radial luster. There is slight reflectivity to the fields, heaviest on the reverse. Some technical wear is noted on the hair where Liberty's ear would be and on the folds of her cap. Regardless of this minimal wear, the recessed areas of Liberty's portrait are quite frosty. There are some light hairlines in the fields but no serious abrasions. A short adjustment was made from stars 11-14. The reverse detail is more of an uncirculated nature and only the slightest amount of friction is found at the top portion of the eagle's left wing. Feather detail is superb and in line with those found on MS61 pieces. Pleasing rose-gold toning is found heavily in the reverse periphery. This variety is noted by the 10x6 Stars arrangement, a small die line under the right side of T, the longer neck of the eagle, a detached tongue and a raised die line above the right hand corner of the shield. PCGS population of 23 with 32 finer. As choice and pleasing as one could wish for an eagle of this series to be! (PCGS # 8559) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 23,000.

1799 $10 Gold Capped Bust. Large obverse stars. . Taraszka-19, Breen-4E; Rarity-3. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. It is safe to say that if you have been looking for one of the finest Draped Bust, Heraldic eagles in existence, then you have found it. The surface preservation, technical perfection and eye appeal of this magnificent piece of artwork are unrivaled by any specimen we are aware of. It is almost incomprehensible that this coin could have managed to survive to the present day in such pristine quality. Both obverse and reverse surfaces are matched with regards to their deep yellow coloration. Olive and reddish-orange hues rest on top of unbroken, completely absorbing luster. Every star is boldly struck, like no other example we have seen. Every strand of Liberty's hair and facet of her portrait is full in definition and unscathed. The eagle on the reverse is fully defined on every portion and coated in a thick layer of shimmering, original frost. In all regards, this beauty is a gem coin, hands down!

It has been almost fifteen years since this eagle has appeared in the numismatic community and we gladly welcome it back. On its last appearance at major auction (Superior, October 7-9, 1990, Lot # 2129) it was pointed out by the cataloguer at that time that "It is highly improbable that you will ever see a more lovely early date U.S. Ten Dollar gold piece". Presented here in the same condition that it was in when it was picked up after that sale, the lot tag is still attached to the back of the old PCGS green label, fat letter holder. Population of 46 with 7 in 65 and 1 in 66. This coin should be sent in for regrade. (PCGS # 8562) .
Estimated Value $50,000 - 75,000.

1801 $10 Gold Capped Bust. PCGS graded AU-58. A gorgeous greenish gold and frosty example of this early eagle! Liberty's portrait is mark free, well struck and without any signs of wear. The curl above the forehead is exceptionally sharp, as is the curl on the cheek, right of ear. Only two obverse marks are mentionable for the sake of identification, a small scratch above the 80 of the date and another in the right field left of stars 9 and 10. The reverse is just as sharp and just as uncirculated in condition as the obverse. The feather detail in both the wings and breast are untouched and the surfaces are exceptional in quality. A small fishhook shaped lint mark under the right leg of M identifies this reverse. The entire coin is struck on a problem free planchet that displays absolutely no adjustment marks. This variety is immediately recognizable by the vertical spines seen in the center top of the cap, a result of die clashing. Unquestionably choice for the grade and a specimen that will undoubtedly bring strong bidding from the quality conscious gold or type collector. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder (PCGS # 8564) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.

1801 $10 Gold Capped Bust. . Taraszka-25, Breen-6848, B-2B. ANACS graded Net AU-50 Cleaned. Attractive greenish gold surfaces and sharp detail define this early Capped Bust eagle. While an improper cleaning has resulted in this example being assigned a net grade by ANACS, we would like to point out the abrasion free quality of the fields, lack of adjustment marks and choice eye appeal of this early U.S. gold scarcity (PCGS # 8564) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

1803 $10 Gold Capped Bust. Small reverse stars. PCGS graded AU-58 PQ. Another magnificent early Capped Bust eagle! Deep yellow gold coloration with frosty surfaces and loads of luster. Every detail of Liberty is well struck and free from signs of any circulation. The surfaces are superb in their condition, displaying only light hairlines. A faint adjustment was made at the rim from stars 9 to 13. The reverse of this beauty has the same coloration, accented with splashes of reddish-orange near the periphery. Original mint frost covers all the surfaces as well as the lettering and devices. The feather detail is sharp and uncirculated in condition. A small spine is seen coming off the end of the branch. A single obverse was used with six different reverse dies, four small star and two large star. For the Small Stars issues, this die pairing (Taraszka-26) is the second rarest and quite scarce. This reverse die is quickly identified by the tips of the arrows extending beyond the right upright of N and the first S of STATES resting on the cloud. Additionally, there is a raised die line between the TA of STATES and a die lump above the M of AMERICA. This crisp example should be examined closely as its condition most likely rivals many of the finest examples of this issue and certainly for the variety. PCGS has graded 18 in AU-58 with only 44 finer. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder (PCGS # 8565) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.

A scuff on the cheek of an otherwise frosty device of Liberty. Reverse shows more reflectivity than the obverse. Struck with the Large Date logotype that was also used on cents and half dollars. PCGS has graded 11 in AU-55 with 5 finer (PCGS # 8584) .

1854-S $10 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50 PQ. The first year of issue of eagles from the San Francisco Mint and always popular with collectors due to this status. The 1854-S, according to population statistics, should be a readily available coin in XF/AU but for some reason finding a nice example can be a challenge when one is needed. This is not to say that AU examples are not available, it just might take longer than one thinks. In grades above AU-50 - 53, the 1854-S is quite tough and seriously undervalued. The present example is one of the finer examples this cataloguer has seen in quite some time. First off, the coin has eye appeal that is almost never seen on this issue. The strike is strong, the surfaces and luster are intact, original frost still exists and the fields are slightly reflective. The surfaces are unabraded and have only light hairlines. A small dash is seen above a dentil directly below the 18 of date. A die crack is seen extending from the rim through M of AMERICA. The mintmark is large and centered above the space between N and D. A rare coin and one that should be reviewed diligently

We note that in Part III of Bowers & Merena's presentation of the Harry Bass, Jr. Collection there was a raw 1854-S Medium Date eagle in a similar grade (Lot #628) that realized $4,600 (PCGS # 8615) .
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

1855-S $10 Gold Liberty. Sharpness of EF-45. Old subtle cleaning. An attractive example of a circulated San Francisco eagle rarity. A mere 9,000 eagles were produced this year at the San Francisco Mint, a huge reduction in mintage from that of the inaugural 1854 eagle (123,826). Survivors are rarely found in choice AU, in fact, PCGS has graded a single AU-55 as the finest known example and NGC has graded only 2 AU-58 examples as finest. The surfaces of this piece are rich orange gold and very lustrous. Detail is closer to AU in sharpness and the overall eye appeal is quite nice.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.

1865-S $10 Gold Liberty. 865 over inverted 186. Sharpness of AU-50 Cleaned. A rare and popular "Red Book" variety that is seldom encountered in such high grade. In spite of its cleaning, this example fits well within the condition census. Between the two major grading services, only one is rated above AU that being a sole MS-60 specimen with NGC grading only 3 in AU-53 thru AU-58.
