Lot 887
Flowing Hair Dollar. 1794. PCGS graded Fine-12 B-1, BB-1. R.4. The 1794 dollar is one of the most intriguing, elusive and historically significant coins in American numismatics! For over 100 years, the appearance of a 1794 dollar at auction has been a notable moment and that spirit and enthusiasm continues today. Only 1,758 pieces were struck and it is estimated that approximately 130 or so exist in all grades today. The present specimen exhibits the typical strike weakness that M.H. Bolender commented on in 1950, stating "Usually found with the impression weak on lower part of date and the stars on left, and sometimes the border milling on left does not show up". This weakness most likely occurring from the dies becoming misaligned after the intial 1794 copper trial piece (which we proudly sold as Lot # 153 of our Benson Sale in February 2001) and first few dollars were produced.
Surfaces have an aged, antique silver appearance and possess the faintest hints of gun-metal blue and magenta toning in the fields. As stated earlier, the weakness on the left stars is expected and the individual stars, while faint, are all still visible. The quality of the surfaces is fantastic for a 1794 dollar! There are no obverse adjustment marks at all and two old, dull scratches in front of the neck are the only marks to speak of. Even wear has discolored the high points to a pleasing light gray and makes Liberty stand out in relief to the rest of the surfaces. The reverse has 4 old remnants of adjustment marks at the rim by the ES of STATES. A soft rim bruise above the E of AMERICA. An old "V" shaped scratch comes off the middle of the eagle's neck. Superbly original and choice. Housed in an old green label PCGS holder. We are certain there will be many eager buyers chasing after this American Classic (PCGS # 6851) .
Estimated Value $30,000 - 40,000.

Flowing Hair Dollar. 1795. 2 leaves beneath each wing. VF-20 Cleaned long ago. Even silver-gray surfaces that were cleaned long ago. The obverse displays hairlines heavier than those on the reverse. Original golden toning has settled over the peripheral areas of the reverse and there is pleasing luster. Feather detail is close to XF. Not a bad example of an early piece of American numismatics.

Lot 889
Flowing Hair Dollar. 1795. 3 leaves beneath each wing. B-5. R-1. PCGS graded AU-53. A crisp and lustrous example of this popular Flowing Hair dollar. Face features are sharp. A mixture of slight wear and strike weakness in hair above ear but the curl on top of forehead is much sharper than usual. Light golden overtones in the obverse periphey. The reverse has a toning spot over STA of STATES and eagle's right wing. No adjustment marks on the planchet and the rims are strong and without bruising. Reverse luster is full, radial and original. Three leaves underneath each eagle's wing. Qucikly identified by a short diagnostic "bar" in the left obverse field coming off the top curl of Liberty's hair.

This classic "Flowing Hair" was struck only for two years, 1794-1795. An inadequate early coining press led to the 1794 issues being notoriously weak. When the larger and much more capable coining press arrived in 1795, production of these dollars skyrocketed. Many scarce die varieties are known for the year 1795 because there was a high percentage of die failures. The B-5, BB27 variety, the present variety, was a very resilient die combination and Bowers has estimated that over 100,000 pieces of this variety were struck (PCGS # 6852) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 15,000.

Flowing Hair Dollar. 1795. 3 leaves beneath each wing. B-5. ANACS graded VF-20. A choice example of this early Flowing Hair dollar. A common variety immediatley identified by the short bar in the left obverse field. Silver-gray surfaces are uniform and mark free. In fact, for a lower grade example, this piece is far above average in terms of planchet quality. The only light scratches seen are on the head (PCGS # 6852) .

Draped Bust Dollar. 1796. Small date, small letters. Bolender-2. Rarity-2. VG-8 Cleaned long ago. A light gray example of this very tough Bust Dollar which exhibits fine hairlines on both surfaces from a cleaning some time ago. Struck just a tad off-center, noticed heaviest on the reverse from 2:00-6:00. Rims are full and unbruised. Ample amount of detail left on all devices and lettering. This die pairing, Small Date with Small Letters, is very tough to locate and appears in the marketplace at a significantly lower rate than the Small Date, Large Letters; Large Date, Large Letters and Large Date, Small Letters varieties.

Draped Bust Dollar. 1797. 10 stars left, 6 right. B-3, BB-71, R-2. Extremely choice example of a Draped Bust, Small eagle silver dollar. The quality of the surfaces and the originality on this piece are truly tough to find these days. Both obverse and reverse have medium gold toning in the periphery that shifts to light olive iridescence over steel gray. Luster is smooth and crisp and of AU quality. Minimal technical wear on the high points is the only characteristic that resembles Extremely Fine for this outstanding piece. Well centered, well struck and displaying no adjustment marks or rim nicks. The only mark is an old, short scratch just below the 10th stars and L of LIBERTY in field. While the 10X6 Stars variety is common, an example of this stature is not. PCGS Pop is 19 with 25 finer.

Draped Bust Dollar. 1797. 10 stars left, 6 right. Bolender-3. Rarity-2. PCGS graded EF-40. Crisp and shimmering with luster still present. The top of Liberty's hair is exceptionally sharp for this grade and only the hair above her ear displays wear. A bit of wear exists on the shoulder but the front of Liberty's bust is defined. Feather detail is still strong, even out to the tip of the eagle's right wing but a bit of flatness exists on the breast. A popular design and the Draped Bust, Small Eagle examples can be tough to find in a pleasing condition. This variety, 10X6 Stars is much scarcer than the 9X7 Stars also found for this date and design. PCGS population is 20 with a total of 44 finer (PCGS # 6865) .

Draped Bust Dollar. 1798. Heraldic eagle reverse, close date. B-12, BB-120, R-4. PCGS graded EF-45. A variety that is scarce in the higher grades. Luster still remains in the periphery and some light golden hues are seen in the charcoal toning of the borders. The wear on the high points is minimal and blends in well with the general original appearance of the coin. Strike weakness on the reverse to the right of the eagle's head (as always seen on this variety). Identified by a small but distinct lint mark at the tips of the lower arrows. A pleasing and solid presentation of this variety and of a Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle dollar in general.

The cataloguer of our September 2002 Sale of the San Marino Collection of Bust Dollars pointed out that the Condition Census for this variety at the time was as noted in the Bowers Encyclopedia, finest is the Bowers Somerset 1992:1321 as AU-55 (Bowers Plate Coin); next is Bowers Tuttle Sale, 1981:2980 as AU-50; next are two XF-45 coins (perhaps this specimen); and then a small group of XF40 coins tied for Fifth Finest Known. Therefore deduction would lead us to believe that the present coin is tied for Fourth Finest with one other specimen (PCGS # 6873) .

A darker toning spot at star 12. The surfaces are solid and have no out of place scratches or marks. Reverse has darker charcoal toning in the letters and around the eagle. This coin was spared any jarring marks or nicks and the only incidence of scratches occurs just under the I of UNITED on the reverse. The diagnostic die dots in the lower E of UNITED and the left side of E in AMERICA are clear.

Draped Bust Dollar. 1802 Narrow Date. Bolender-6. Rarity-1. NGC graded MS-64. Astoundingly white and pristine high grade Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle dollar! Original metal flow lines are still seen in the periphery of the obverse and reverse. Every detail sharp from a heavy blow from the dies. Luster shifts across all surfaces with ease, meeting no impairments. A short tick mark in the center of the neck. On the reverse there is a small planchet flaw just above the tips of the arrows, an identifier helpful in future pedigree research.

The 1802 dollar as a date is significantly more scarce than the 1798 and 1799 issues. Even so, mint state examples of this variety (Bolender-6) are available in mint state and this is one of the most commonly encountered 1802 varieties. This does not mean that a coin such as this is common, for the near-gem grade assigned this beauty places this piece among the Finest Known for this date and variety. Those building a high grade type set should pay special attention to the offering of this condition rarity! NGC population of 8 in MS64 with 3 graded in MS65.

Liberty Seated Dollar. 1855. PCGS graded Proof 64. A white example of a key rarity in this series. The faintest champagne film rests on top of "flashlight" bright reflective fields. Liberty is frosty and near cameo in appearance. Identified by a small horizontal scratch only visible with 6x magnification on Liberty's left leg. An impressive example of a very elusive issue. High grade business strikes are virtually impossible to locate from all the dollar issues of this era. Consequently, demand has always been strong for the few proofs that exist in grades where business strikes do not. The few 1855 proofs that do exist in grades as high as this piece are aggressively sought after as 1855 business strikes are unheard of in this condition. It is thought that perhaps 20-30 proofs exist in all grades from an estimated mintage of 50 pieces. PCGS has graded 9 examples in PR64 with 2 PR65 specimens as finest. An important offering of an issue that commonly can have years pass between appearances! (PCGS # 6998) .

After years of tiny mintage figures from the 1850's, the Philadelphia Mint picked up production and made 300 proofs in 1858. Liberty Seated Dollar. 1861. PCGS graded Proof 64. An enchanting example of one of only 1,000 proofs struck at a time that our country was descending into the beginning of the dark Civil War Period. Coins started to disappear from circulation as the Civil War progressed and the public hoarded what "good" money they could get their hands on. Thus survivors are scarce and this near-gem piece is desirable and choice. Subtle darker grey toning surrounds a brighter and frosty Liberty. These gray tones quickly shift to magenta, champagne and gun-metal blue as this coin is turned. Radial luster exists from the periphery halfway into the fields. The reverse deserves the same applause and one will be impressed by its' lack of any marks. Identified by a small lintmark at the top of O in ONE. PCGS has graded 19 in PR64 with 6 in PR65 and a single PR67 as the finest (PCGS # 7004) .
