Lot 967
1842-D $5 Liberty. Small date. NGC graded MS-62. Tied for the finest graded of this date by NGC with a total of 7 coins, there are none graded higher, and PCGS hasn't graded any of this date in any mint state grades as of now. Toned with light yellow gold with copious luster in the fields. The strike is sharp and well defined for this date and mint, with each star full and complete, and the fine curls on Liberty sharp as well. Even the eagle and his craggy feet are sharp, as are the neck and thigh feathers. Only 37,917 were coined and obviously not many were saved in mint state grades. A pinnacle acquisition for the specialist who needs this date, and one that likely will remain tied for the finest known of the issue.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 22,000.

1853-C $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. A scarce date in all grades, this particular one boasts nice surfaces and a touch of coppery gold toning around the obverse periphery. The strike is average, with most of the details fairly clear but trace weakness can be seen on the high points. Always in demand for the scarce date and Charlotte Mintmark.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

Lot 974
1856-C $5 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. The finest graded example of this date by NGC or PCGS and alone in the MS-62 grade! Both services have graded 5 others as MS-61 each. Pleasing orange gold in color, with traces of coppery toning around the devices. The strike is remarkable for its completeness and sharpness on the high points of the central design elements, and most of the stars as well, but a few are weak at the centers. Liberty's face is very clean, and shows few signs of handling. Most of the scattered ticks are located in the fields, as these tend to attract marks like bugs to a light. We note a tiny speck between stars five and six and this may help to trace this specimen. Mintages stopped at 28,457 for the year, and this date is prohibitively rare in AU grades, and nearly impossible to locate in mint state. A few seawater uncs. were recovered from what is said to be a Confederate transport ship, but this coin is obviously not from that source as the surfaces don't show the matte surface from decades of tidal and sand action. If you demand the finest, then here it is of this important and rare date.
Estimated Value $17,500-UP.

1856-C $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. A rare coin in this grade, NGC has graded only 9 this high, with 8 graded higher. The surfaces are pleasing for their smooth texture, and the strike is sharp even on the peripheral stars. Identifiable by a small peeling planchet lamination on the reverse rim just past the denomination.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.

Lot 976
1858-C $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Minor handling marks in the fields but Liberty's face is generally clean. Note the fullness in the strike, with the stars and Liberty's curls, as well as the eagle's claws, all full and complete. About as nice as this date is found, with NGC reporting 23 this high, and 13 graded in mint state grades above.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Lot 977
1859-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. One of the finest graded of this date, and certainly high in the condition census from the original mintage of a scant 31,847. The devices are well struck on the obverse, and also on the reverse despite that die showing evidence of rust, primarily in the fields. Clean surfaces that reflect minimal handing marks, the reverse a bit hazy in appearance. The PCGS Population Report shows only 4 graded this high, with 6 graded higher in various mint state grades. Always in demand for the Charlotte Mintmark, and as one of the final issues before the Civil War stormed across the land.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Lot 978
1860-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Bright and flashy, with slightly mirrored fields. Only 14,813 were struck as this nation sunk towards civil war in the dark days of 1860. The Charlotte Mint was firmly ensconced in Southern Territory, and no doubt the employees were sympathetic to the plight of the South. Gold and silver was hoarded by all those who could afford to do so, as the winds of war gathered strength. Here is an example that was probably set aside at the time of issue, and kept as a memento in mint state condition to this day. As always, the strike is weak on the eagle, but this one has strong detail on Liberty and the stars. Identifiable by a minor planchet line through the second star and pointing towards the junction of Liberty's neck and chin, and this was in the planchet prior to striking. An extreme rarity this nice, and we note that PCGS has graded only 2 this high, with a single coin higher, that at MS-63 above for this important, rare and desirable date. In PCGS holder number 3699906.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.

Lot 980
1871 $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-60. The is the finest graded and only mint state example seen by PCGS, of this rare date. The coinage presses halted after a paltry 3,200 were struck, and virtually all entered circulation. This particular one was set aside, perhaps as a birthday present, or wedding gift, and somehow survived in mint state condition. Toned with golden hues on the obverse, and a trace of haze on the reverse, we feel this one is a cut above the usually encountered circulated examples. If you demand the very finest for your collection, then here is the best coin graded of the date by PCGS. A rare opportunity to purchase this condition rarity. In PCGS holder number 5022979.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Lot 981
1871-CC $5 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. A truly rare coin in top grades, this date is all but impossible to find nice. The Carson City Mint began production in 1870, always in limited amounts, and focused on the larger denomination gold coins (more bang for the buck). Hence, only 20,770 half eagles were struck in 1871, but don't let that number deceive you, these are truly rare coins. In point of fact, PCGS has only graded 71 pieces in all grades, and not a single coin of those in any mint state grade. The current PCGS Population Report shows only 5 graded this high, with 6 graded in various AU grades above. As Breen states, this date is "Usually in low grades; prohibitively rare EF".
This coin shows a rich orange gold color with some luster in the protected areas. The surfaces show the expected handling marks, but they are not distracting or deeper than usually seen. A touch of haze is noted on the lower obverse. A rarity in this grade and a piece that would make an excellent addition to an advanced date or CC collection.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.
