$10 Capped Bust

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1025
1797. Large eagle. BD-2. Well struck and lightly toned. Under magnification, we note some faint fine hairlines probably from an old cleaning. PCGS Genuine. Cleaned-AU Detail. The surfaces exhibit a soft yellow gold color throughout and show strong definition from the strike. A lovely example that should please most collectors. Early Capped Bust eagles are quite impressive, these were the largest gold coins struck by our Mint until the Double Eagles came into being in 1850. These large early Capped Bust eagles are regal in hand, especially so when found in high grade like the present example. The obverse stars are arranged 10 left and six right, this due to the large Cap on Liberty and her head which barely fit onto die. Pleasing orange-gold color and rather typical of the quality of these early gold coins (PCGS # 8559) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP
