$5 Capped Bust/Large Eagle

Lot 1013
1798 Fourteen Star Reverse. BD-3, Rarity-5. NGC graded MS-60. This is truly an amazing coin! The surfaces are phenomenal quality and the strike is bold throughout. Furthermore, this is the blundered reverse die with fourteen stars over the eagle, a number count was not at all current in 1798, nor even 1795 when coinage of half eagles first began. It would seem likely that the die engraver simply lost count and put in an extra star. As such this variety is quickly recognizable and in constant demand from major variety collectors. Toned with splendid light golden hues, with a touch of copper showing in the color. The reverse perfectly matched in color and surface quality. A thin but visible die crack is noted down from the F in OF to the right serif of the final A in AMERICA arcing across the eagle, shield and stem. An outstanding opportunity to purchase a truly special, high end coin with amazing potential. Pop 1; Finest graded at NGC for this variety. Estimated Value $50,000 - 60,000

1800 Blunt 1. BD-2, Rarity 3+. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck with lovely golden-olive mint bloom color. For the variety this is likely one of the finer examples known as precious few early half eagles merit the Choice grade from PCGS. The surfaces are satiny and bright, with minimal signs of handling. The strike is bold as noted, and the stars are fully brought up on both the obverse and reverse. This is an extraordinary grade for a Capped Bust, Heraldic Eagle $5 gold piece. From the meager numbers that survived at all the vast majority do show some degree of circulation, even if they remain in high technical grades today. Mint state pieces are scarce to rare for any date of ths type. Here is one that is not only mint state, but Choice too! That's quite a miraculous event to find a coin that is 224 years old still in virtually the same condition that it was struck in so long ago. While not the absolute finest, but still quite respectible for its charming qualities and choice condition overall. No adjustment marks are seen, and the eye appeal is exceptional for this prized early date Capped Bust half eagle. Bathed in glittering luster and highly appealing. Pop 13; 3 in 63+, 10 in 64, 1 in 64+, 1 in 66+. (PCGS # 8082) Estimated Value $25,000 - UP

1802, 2 over 1. Centered Overdate. BD-1, Rarity 4+. PCGS graded MS-62. Nice and frosty with natural honey-golden color mint luster. The strike is sharp on Liberty's curls as well as the eagle. Frosty luster dances across the surfaces and there is just a whisper of classic coppery gold hues on the lower reverse from long and careful storage. The overdate feature is sharp, with a clear 1 prominently placed below the 2 which was obviouly punched into the die without any effort to efface the original underlying 1. It is noteworthy that no 1801 half eagles were produced, but obviously dies were prepared, then overdated when 1802 rolled around and production of half eagles resumed in that year. Clean surfaces and abundant eye appeal for this popular overdate. Impressive quality for this early era coinage. Pop 35; 1 in 62+, 31 in 63, 1 in 63+, 16 in 64, 4 in 64+, 1 in 65, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 8083) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP

1802, 2 over 1. Centered Overdate. BD-2, Rarity-4+. NGC graded MS-62. A nice full strike and lightly toned with frosty mint luster and a dusting of russet color. Sharply struck throughout and well preserved, with Liberty's face and cheek smooth and attractive. The open fields are free of detracting marks or adjustments that often are seen on these early half eagles. The reverse shows two small patches of die rust from improper storage at the Mint, one just above the left facing wing tip, the other between TA of STATES and these are diagnostic to this variety and seen on the later coins struck from these dies that had developed a few small patches of rust in steamy old Philadelphia. Pop 25; 32 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 8083) Estimated Value $12,500 - UP

1802, 2 over 1. Centered Overdate. BD-1, Rarity-4+. PCGS graded EF-45. PCGS XF-45. Delicate golden-orange overtones and with pleasing surfaces and well struck. A scarce type coin that is hard to find well preserved and with this interesting overdate as well. Most of the early gold coins have dried up from the marketplace in recent years. Here is one that offers high grade, nice color and surfaces, and trouble free overall. Highly collectible today and of rich historical value too (PCGS # 8083) Estimated Value $5,000 - UP

1802, 2 over 1. Centered Overdate. BD-2, Rarity-4+. PCGS Genuine. Edge Repaired-AU Detail. Still a nice looking coin which offers strong details and just a minor repair to the edge. The central features are high grade and attractive. Later die state of the reverse with a die cud or chip over the F in OF to the rim. The dies were used until they chipped in this fashion as die steel was expensive and every effort was made to extend the coining capacity of these early dies, which is why many are known with terminal chips and breaks, particularly on the reverse dies (PCGS # 8083) Estimated Value $1,500 - UP

1803, 3 over 2. BD-1. PCGS Genuine. Cleaned-Unc Detail. Boldly struck with full center points and the stars nice and sharp. Probably lightly wiped with a cloth decades ago, now shimmering with a delicate golden-orange patina. Actually, a very attractive coin despite the cleaning indication. Faint adjustment marks are noted on Liberty's cap which were mostly obliterated by the force of the strike. Bold overdate feature and nice surfaces otherwise. A popular issue! (PCGS # 8084) Estimated Value $6,000 - UP

1804. Small 8 over Large 8. BD-7. PCGS graded MS-62. Fully lustrous, nice and frosty with no distracting marks or flaws. The devices are sharply struck and pleasing. The boldly repunched date is a dramatic feature where the die engraver went with a smaller date punch after engraving in the larger numerals, the result is almost comical when the date is examined. Excellent surfaces and visual appeal throughout. There are a trace of adjustment marks on the lower right reverse rim. About 100-150 known. Pop 10; 15 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8086) Estimated Value $25,000 - UP
