Off the market since 2009, this stunning $2 Silver has dark blue overprints of the serials and seal contrasting beautifully against the bright white paper. Simply called the most beautiful note ever to be issued by the United States, these Five Dollar Educational notes depict an allegorical scene of Electricity Presenting Light to the World, with an alternative description of Electricity as the Dominant Force in the World. Last on the market in 2010, this note also has a courtesy autograph of US Treauser D.N. Morgan just above his printed signature at lower right. One of only two banks in Lowell to survive the entire National Banking era, with the Appleton switching from a state bank to a national bank in April 1865. The signatures are the gentleman that began once the bank chartered, John F. Kimball as Cashier and John A. Knowles as President, serving together until 1875. Rare. Estimated Value $300 - UP

This lovely Ace has been off the market since 2013, and boasts a bright red seal and charter numbers. A slight "New England trim" as the left edge is the only mention on this unmolested note that still carries the pen signatures of Jonathan Morris as Cashier and Charles T. Hillyer as President. The bank was placed into receivership in May 1903. This Ace, which last appeared at auction in 1998, has retained nice colors along with the pen signatures of Elisha Sherwood as Cashier and Francis D. Perry as President. The only bank to charter in this Hampshire county town, and would last through the entire National Banking era. Likely the only First Charter Five on the bank. While it does have some circulation issues it faces up nicely and retains good color. Pen signatures of R. J. D. Westcott as Cashier and Leonard M. $5 National Bank Note. Farmers and Mechanics NB of Hartford, CT. Ch. 1321. Fr. 403. PMG Choice Fine 15 Net. Severed & Reattached, Foreign Substance. This was the eighth bank to have been granted a charter in the state capital by June of 1865. The vast majority of notes known are Aces, with this being the only First Charter Five known, and was last seen in a 1998 CAA sale. A large tear starts at lower left and extends up to the charter number, and at some point had tape covering it, along with a couple of other small tears and a small repair. This is still a very presentable note that still retains the pen signatures of William Smith as Cashier and Alva Oatman as President. Estimated Value $500 - UP

Chartered in 1865, this institution only issued First Charter notes before being liquidated in August 1885. Fortunately for collectors a few uncirculated sheets were discovered and cut years ago, provided both Type and Illinois collectors the opportunity to own an Uncirculated Ten (or Twenty) for this bank. Chartered in February of 1865, this is the only First Charter note known from this long serving institution. While definitely well circulated, the pen signatures still survive of Augustus Blakesley as Cashier and Augustus Chase as President. Both men served in these capacities from 1865 unitl 1895. Chartered in May 1873 as the First National Gold Bank of Santa Barbara, it would drop the Gold moniker in 1880 to this title. While listed in the census, our consignor purchased this privately in 2003. Stamped signatures of H.P. Lincoln as Cashier and R.B. Chartered November 4, 1899, the Brooks NB would not complete their 20 year charter, being liquidated in March 1917 after only issuing 1882 Brown and Date Backs. A paltry $1,000 was left outstanding in notes upon liqudation, and today a dozen notes are recorded. Signed by John Brooks as Cashier and Isaac Brooks as President. Some repair work is noted. $5 National Bank Note. First NB of Hartford, CT. Ch. 121. Fr. 587. PMG About Unc 55. Chartered in November of 1863, the First NB lasted throughout the entire National Banking era, issuing just over $17 million in notes during that time. This is by far the finest of the five known Red Seals on the bank as well as any large size notes currently known from this institution. A beautiful survivor that looks like it was just printed.
