Lot 328
1867. Rays. NGC graded MS-64. CAC. PQ. Nice light golden toning. After the initial designs of the Shield nickel were accepted, the Philadelphia Mint ran into production problems in that the use of nickel in the planchets (only 25%, but enough to notice) was causing the dies to crack and chip abnormally fast. This was caused by the hardness of the nickel alloy, which resisted the striking process with its density that worked against the dies. The designer knew that by reducing the complexity of the devices would make these easier to strike, so the Rays around the 5 were eliminated. The dies still cracked rapidly, but not as much as before, so this created the With Rays type coins produced only in 1866 and part of 1867. Housed in an Old Style Holder. Pop 191; 70 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $700 - 750

1873. Closed 3. NGC graded MS-63. CAC. PQ. Well struck with a light hint of gold tone. 1879. PCGS graded MS-65. CAC. PQ. A hint of light gold tone. Boldly struck and a gem with CAC approval. A low mintage date which is seldom seen and rarely offered in mint state grades, let alone gem as seen here. Just 25,900 minted in all for the year, and precious few survive! PCGS records 233 grading events, undoubtedly with some duplication in this number, which spans grades from PR01 to MS67 at the top currently. This is one of the key dates to the series, topped only by the 1880 which has an even lower mintage! Pop 30; 34 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 3808) Estimated Value $2,700 - 3,000
