Fractional Envelope. J. Leach, New York. Postage Stamps 15 Cents. Located at 86 Nassau Street in New York. A wholly intact envelope using buff paper and a light red printing for 15 Cents in stamps. An excellent example. Estimated Value $500 - UP
Due to an editorial in the New York Herald in the early part of the Civil War, these envelopes were created to be offered to the public, with the enclosed amount in stamps usually printed on the face of the envelope. And just like encased postage, vendors realized this is another form of advertising for their firms.
