1796. LIKERTY. LM-1. Rarity-3. PCGS graded MS-64. Here is an incredible example of what is clearly one of the scarcest type coins to find in any grade. Remarkably, it is on the cusp of gem condition! The color is quite attractive with a blend of light golden patina near the rims, while the centers are silver white. The strike is unbelievable for this early and often crudely struck issue, as here is a coin with full definition on Liberty's upper most curls, as well as full breast feathers on the eagle. The depth of the strike is all the more amazing when one considers how cracked and clashed both dies were at the time this one was struck. How it survived in such exceptional condition is a mystery, but here it is.

The Draped Bust, Small Eagle design was struck for only two short years for half dimes--1796 and 1797. No half dimes were struck again until 1800, when the Heraldic Eagle design was used. Thus there are precious few of these Small Eagle coins around today. The vast majority known, again there aren't that many to begin with--are well worn and many are damaged or bent due to their small size and thin planchets. Close examination of this glorious coin will find a matrix of die cracks combined with mirror images of the opposing die clashed into the fields, primarily the palm leaves in the right obverse field, and Liberty's bust and hair showing all around through the reverse wreath. This is a magnificent example in so many ways, as it captures the potential quality produced at the Philadelphia Mint in its earliest days, shows the efficiency of using dies well beyond their initial cracks and clashes, displays the wonderful microquality of engraving on such a tiny die, and yet all the design elements work in a most elegant and cohesive fashion to produce this incredible 1796 half dime. This is one of the finer examples known of this prized and elusive issue, and a coin that any specialist will always be proud to own. A hint of light gold tone. Boldly struck with reflective fields. Only 10,230 struck. Pop 4; 3 finer, 1 in 65, 1 in 67, 1 in 67+. (PCGS # 4254) Estimated Value $35,000 - 40,000

1800 LM-1. Rarity-3. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck, in fact double struck on the reverse, with just a slight shift but enough to show clear doubling on the ribbon motto. Lovely antique gold and russet toning on both sides, with light silver in portions of the fields and on the devices. An important offering as rarely are these early silver coins found in Mint condition, and nicely toned on both sides. This is a later die state with a minor die break seen below the 00 of the date. An impressive coin for the astute collector. Only 40,000 struck. Pop 19; 19 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4264) Estimated Value $13,000 - UP

1801. LM-2, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-61. This is a rare and desirable early Draped Bust half dime in Mint State. Precious few survive this nice as virtually all of these circulated, usually into much lower grades before being saved. The obverse shows a sharp strike, particularly on Liberty's hair curls, and this despite a long arcing crack through the left side of the die along the back of Liberty's hair, crossing through the date at 18. For the reverse the surfaces are pleasing with a few light marks noted when carefully studied, and there is a minor planchet flaw caused when the early Philadelphia Mint was rolling out thie planchet, with a small fleck of slag or debris leftover which was rolled into the planchet, somewhat hidden by the shield design. Nice light gold tone with areas of russet gold blended in. Mostly well struck. Only 27,760 struck. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 63, 1 in 67. Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000

1801 LM-2. Rarity-4. NGC graded AU-55. An untoned example that shows strong definition on Liberty's hair and the eagle too. The fields and devices show minor handling marks from limited circulation as one would expect. Splendid antique gold and gray on both sides. 1801 half dimes are quite rare in any grade as few were struck and far fewer survive today. Finding an example even approaching mint state like this coin--requires considerable patience and the ability to jump when offered. A condition rarity this nice! Only 27,760 struck. Pop 2; 5 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000
