Morris, Robert: Founding Father, First Superintendent of Finance (1734-1806) One of the most important figures in the founding of the United States. Robert Morris served as a member of the Pennsylvania legislature, the Second Continental Congress, a US Senator from Pennsylvania, and significantly, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. Finally as the first Superintendent of Finance, with Alexander Hamilton and Albert Gallatin set the course for America's financial system. Offered is a boldly endorsed promissory note by Morris, 4 x 7" dated April 20, 1795, for a whopping $3000.00. In superior condition. Included is a vintage original engraving of Morris 5 x 7".   Washington, George: Related Pieces, Three Documents Signed Robert Livingston, Hodijah Baylies, Jedidiah Huntington & Oration at Death. Collection of 4 pieces all relating to George Washington. 1.) Robert R. Livingston, Founding Father and part of the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence. Livingston also administered the oath of office to Washington and later as Minister to France negotiated the Louisiana Purchase. Livingston has signed as witness to a document by Elizabeth Gouverneur naming Richard Varick (Mayor of New York) as her counsel in divorce dated April, 1787. Two pp. 8 x 6½". Scattered damp staining but text very legible as is Livingston's elegant signature. 2.) Signed promissory notes by Hodijah Baylies, one of Washington's (scarce) aide-de-camps dated Sept. 14, 1786. Also signing is Gen. Benjamin Lincoln and his son. Fine condition, very legible even with customary pen cancellation. Single page recto verso, 8 x 6¼" with two thin strips on verso to hold in check the fragile fold lines. 3.) 1781 pay order signed by celebrated Revolutionary War General, Jedidiah Huntington and later one of the original organizers of The Order of Cincinnati, 4 x 6" and in superior condition. 4.) Published oration delivered at Wethersfield, February 22, 1800 On The Death of General George Washington (died December 14, 1799), by Ebenezer Grant Marsh and printed by Hudson and Goodwin, Hartford, 1800. 16 pp. 9 x 5¾" Overall very fined condition with only a light damp stain in top quarter of pamphlet. Two Union Generals: Daniel Sickels and George Sears Greene. Daniel Sickles (1819-1914) Union general, congressman and diplomat, also known for being the first person acquitted of murder on grounds of temporary insanity (after killing Francis Scott Key's son). Check signed "D. Sickles," New York, June 25, 1885. A Bank of the Metropolis check, engrossed in Sickles' hand, to Herring & Co. for $9.50. Attractively matted with an engraving and a biographical plaque and framed to an overall size of 16¾ x 23½".
With George Sears Greene (1801-99) Civil engineer and Union general; hero at Culps Hill. Civil War-date document signed "Geo. S. Greene," one page, 10 x 8", May 15, 1862. One month after being promoted to brigadier general, Greene signs a Certificate of Disability For Discharge for Milo B. Collins of the New York State Volunteers. Handsomely matted with an engraving and a biographical plaque to an overal size of 24 x 28"
