Buddy Ebsen Jr., Four Signed Checks all from Summer of 1938 Prior to His Brief Filming in The Wizard of Oz (1928-2003) Originally a dancer in Hollywood, his first feature Broadway Melody of 1936 landed him an iconic role in Captain January dancing with Shirley Temple. He auditioned and won the role of the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, then switched roles with Ray Bolger who was cast as the Tin Man. That friendly switch Ebsen agreed to as Bolger so wanted to play the role proved most unlucky because the aluminum in the makeup for Ebsen landed him in the hospital for a lengthy stay due to the levels of toxicity. But Ebsen became an icon of 60s television as Jed Clampett in The Beverly Hillbillies and later Barnaby Jones in the 1970s. Offered are four checks signed by Ebsen from 1938 including one to his then first wife, Ruth who he divorced four years later. All the checks are written from the Beverly Hill's branch of Bank of America, Ebsen's signature is in steel point fountain pen ink, and all written just prior to filming the ten days he was on set for Oz. Estimated Value $200 - UP
