Lot 1405
1838. NGC graded AU-55. This is one of a very select group of eagles struck in 1838 with the first appearance of the Gobrecht Coronet or Liberty design. The eagle or $10 gold piece had not been struck since 1804 and with some determination the Mint again decided to strike these large, handsome coins. Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht was given the task or designing a new $10 gold coin for circulation. This initial design was most elegant, but apparently created some difficullties in striking as the head of Liberty was changed in mid 1839. Here we see a long swept back curl of hair from Liberty's temple to her beaded cord tying up her hair bun. This feature was changed in mid 1839 to be a group of smaller, shorter curls that appear more natural. Furthermore, the neck and bust line used in 1838 shows dramatic and elegant curves, with her shoulders ending in a sharp point, these curved lines were vastly straightened out in 1839, to a more boxy but likely more practical design. Lightly toned with eye catching copper tints over classic orange-gold. Some luster visible in the protected areas. Only 7,200 struck, and highly prized for its short lived type and first appearance of the Gobrecht eagle. Pop 10; 15 finer, 11 in 58, 3 in 58+, 1 in 62. (PCGS # 8575) Estimated Value $17,000 - 18,000

1847-O. Minor Variety, RPD. PCGS graded MS-61. CAC. The PCGS Number for this coin is "V8598". A nice frosty example with the slight repunching on the 18 low. Natural yellow-gold on both sides, lustrous and attractive with nice surfaces. Not many of these survive in true mint state condition and this is a very nice example for the collector. Pop 7; 8 finer at PCGS for regular 1847-O $10. (PCGS # 8598) Estimated Value $10,000 - UP

1848-O. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC. PQ. A lovely untoned example with considerable golden white frost on Liberty's head, a clean cheek and neck too. The fields are somewhat reflective, and show gorgeous color and great preservation. This date and mint is plentiful in lower circulated grades, but mint state pieces, especially nice attractive ones like this, are few and far between. A classic condition rarity! Great eye appeal. Only 35,850 struck. Pop 3; 5 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8600) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP

1849. PCGS graded AU-58. Repunched date with 1 high, then lowered. Bright and lustrous, with excellent surfaces and strong luster. A nice untoned example. This is the first year the California Gold Rush really got moving as word spread back east of the gold discovery way out west in 1848. People from the east flooded west, by boat, overland and by whatever means they could travel. The easy pickings were short lived though, and most of the miners failed to secure riches. Here is a splendid coin that serves to recall these exciting times, rich in history and quality as well. Pop 29; 46 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8601) Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500

1854-O. Large date. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. PQ. A lovely example with nice mint luster. Should be regraded to Mint State. The date punch was intended for the double eagle or silver dollar, and is quite large on this eagle sized coin. Excellent surfaces with only a few shallow ticks and most of the luster is intact. As commonly seen the strike is a touch soft on the curl that dangles down over her neck, this is nearly always seen on this New Orleans issue. A lovely example of this date and mint and a true condition rarity at this lofty grade. Only 52,500 struck. Pop 19; 4 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 98614) Estimated Value $8,000 - UP

Lot 1411
1881-O. NGC graded MS-61. CAC. Well struck and mostly untoned save for a few traces of coppery gold hues. The strike is sharp throughout, and the surfaces show the expected scattered handling marks primarily in the fields. This is a very rare date. Precious few survive at all (about 225 pieces according to CoinFacts) and this is tied with best seen. Finding an example of this date in any grade is a real challenge. Only 8,350 struck. Pop 8; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. (PCGS # 8693) Estimated Value $15,000 - UP

1896-S. NGC graded MS-63. Frosty with lovely light gold tone and eye catching luster throughout. The surfaces are quite fresh and clean, and this is certainly one of the finer examples of this date and mint known. Most 1896-S eagles show considerably more handling marks than present here. Liberty's face and neck are particularly clean. As often found on the 1896-S eagles, the mintmark is somewhat poorly defined at its center but the upper serif is sharp. A lot of eye appeal here! Well struck and choice. Pop 1; 3 finer, 2 in 64, 1 in 68. (PCGS # 8736) Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500

1908-D. No motto. PCGS graded MS-64. Glorious rich coppery gold color throughout, with vibrant luster and amazing surface quality. Examination finds only a couple of minor bagmarks, blending into the devices and keeping the open fields satin smooth and attractive. This is an early date from the Saint-Gaudens series, still lacking the Motto which was added in late 1908. This is a condition rarity this nice, and nearly impossible to find appreciably finer without spending far more than this splendid example will cost. An opportunity for the advanced specialist. Lovely toning and boldly struck. Pop 58; 16 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8854) Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000

Lot 1419
1908-D. With motto. NGC graded MS-66. Here is a stellar condition rarity of this first year of the With Motto style reverse, which was adopted in mid 1908. There gorgeous Indian $10 gold pieces were a masterpiece of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the famed sculptor who passed away in August of 1907, shortly after designing these splendid coins. The obverse shows Liberty facing left, wearing an Indian war bonnet with LIBERTY inscribed at its base, she is surrounded by 13 stars and the date is placed below her neck truncation. For the reverse Gobrecht chose a standing eagle which is clutching a banded group of arrows, carefully wrapped in an olive branch with fruit. Above the eagle is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA which follows the curvature of the rim, behind the eagle's back is E PLURIBUS UNUM, and before his chest the Motto IN GOD WE TRUST has been added to this late 1908 issue and continues until the end of the series. Below the eagle is TEN DOLLARS. The surfaces are outstanding in preservation, and this is clearly one the finest certified of this date and mint. A numismatic prize which will be a centerpiece of any advanced collection of these popular Ten Dollar gold coins. Boldly struck with lovely golden toning. Pop 4; 4 finer, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67, 1 in 68. (PCGS # 8860) Estimated Value $25,000 - UP
