Lot 707
1839/8, Type of 1838. PCGS graded AU-55. This is one of the most popular type coins and a real challenge to find this nice. This first type was only issued in 1838 and part of 1839 and were the original designs by Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht. Liberty shows two significant designs which were altered in late 1839 to the design which carried through into 1907 for this series. First off Liberty's hair sweeps down over her ear and then is wrapped up in her bun tied with a beaded chord. Then the truncation line is quite dramatic with a sweeping arch and then terminates down the back of her shoulder in a point. Perhaps these features caused the dies to fail, or met with trouble with the controlling powers of the Mint. What we do know is that this is a most elegant representation of Liberty and one of the most favored by numismatists today. Sadly the limited numbers known only allow rather serious collectors to obtain an example. Today perhaps 225 pieces exist in all, this from a mintage of only 25,801 struck. Pop 9; 22 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8576) Estimated Value $8,000 - UP

Lot 708
1839. Large letters. NGC graded AU-55. This is the Type of 1838, with the swept back hair covering Liberty's ear and the elegantly sinuous curvature to her trunaction line which ends in an abrupt point on her back. The color is most pleasing with orange-gold toning noted around the periphery on both sides, with generally attractive surfaces. These is on minor nick at the top of the obverse and on the correspondeing section of the reverse, but this is old and easy to overlook given the overall appeal and surfaces of this particular coin. Mostly untoned at the centers. Only 25,801 struck. Pop 27; 39 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000

Lot 710
1853-O. NGC graded MS-62. Well struck with lots of mint luster. A nice untoned example that offers super clean surfaces and fantastic eye appeal. Although this is one of the more common dates from the New Orleans Mint, for some reason this date and mint is virtually unheard of in Mint State. This exact coin is the finest certified to date between both NGC and PCGS. As such, it is highly desirable and worthy of the most advanced collection. A fantastic opportunity for the specialist. Only 51,000 struck. Pop 1; the finest example graded at both services. (PCGS # 8612) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP
