Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 675
1839-C. NGC graded MS-61. Well struck and mostly untoned for this highly prized early Charlotte Mint issue. This is the final year of the Classic Head quarter eagle (1834-1839). When the Charlotte, New Orleans and Dahlonega Mint started to coin these, the Philadelphia Mint had to decide where to put the mintmarks of the respective branch mints. As mintmarks had never been used prior to 1838 in the United States, this proved problematic. At first the C, O or D was placed above the date in the small open field, and this seemed satisfactory. However; the powers that be decided the branch mintmarks should be placed on the reverse, in a less prominate postion above the denomination. As a quick glance will show, both of these dies used in 1839, show bisecting die cracks, and the Dahlonega Mint no doubt had to struggle to coin as many of these quarter eagles as they did that year before their dies fell apart. Only 18,140 struck. Pop 10; 4 finer, 3 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 7699) Estimated Value $19,000 - UP
