Lot 232
1847. NGC graded Proof 66. This is a prized and extremely rare early Proof issue. The original mintage was large for this decade, with perhaps as many as 10 pieces struck. Over the ensuing generations a few have been lost or disappeared, and today 8 are thought to be known. This one is tied with one other (a PCGS coin) at the top of those seen at the lofty gem PF-66 level. This particular coin has a monumental pedigree which matches both its quality and rarity--Atwater, Pittman, Gardner. Each of those names speaks for itself. Boldly struck with lovely old time iridescent toning.

Prior to 1858, Proof production was quite hit or miss at the Philadelphia Mint. In some years no pieces were struck at all, in other years several pieces were struck, likely on a made to order system. Special reverse dies were set aside and used over several years in some cases on various denominations, while new obverses were required due to the dates located there. For this elusive 1847 quarter, only 10 pieces struck, with 8 examples estimated (at most) to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. Today the rarity of these early Proofs is becoming more understood and their popularity continues to rise with demand. Naturally precious few are around and collectors must fight over the few that are available. Here is one that carries its own credentials and would be a most welcome addition to any advanced collection. Pop 1; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimated Value $25,000 - UP

1850-O. NGC graded MS-65. Boldly struck with nice multi-colorful toning that has formed in tiny flecks over both sides, tawny gold and russet overall in appearnce, but a light brings out the colorful array. This is a rare date in high grade, and is certainly among the finest known 1850-O quarters. Don't miss out if your are seeking a powerful representative of this issue. Pop 2; 1 finer in 66. Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000

1852-O. NGC graded MS-61. Fully white with reflective surfaces on both sides and probably an early strike from the dies. Unlike most of the low mintage this year, this coin was not scuried away and melted for the modest profit. The strike is a touch soft on Liberty's hair curls and the upper stars, but sharp elsewhere. A very rare date in Mint State and one that is rather nice for the grade. Only 96,000 struck. Pop 1; 1 finer in 63. Estimated Value $8,000 - UP

1854-O. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-65. CAC. PQ. Lovely deep blue and russet-golden toning on both sides with hints of mint fresh luster beneath. Among the finest known of this seemingly common date, but this is a condition rarity in any grade even approaching this level. The Philadelphia issue is far more available. If you have been seeking a splendid toned example of the Arrows at date type, then look no further than this amazing coin. Pop 3; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 5433) Estimated Value $15,000 - UP

1863. NGC graded MS-66+. As the depths of the Civil War continued, and battles became more difficult, this 1863 quarter was struck. It was carefully set aside by somone who cared for it well. Today it is tied with a few others as the finest known of the date. The strike is bold with a partial wire rim seen on the obverse. The fields are perfectly smooth and lustrous, with no detracting nicks or marks. The color is a pale glaze of golden iridescence. Boldly struck and lightly toned. Pop 1; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP

1864. NGC graded Proof 68. A hint of light gold and blue toning with deeper accents of russet and deep blue at the rims. The surfaces are absolutely perfect in quality, close examination finds nothing to fault, and the delicate mirror fields are stunning. The frost on the devices is equaly elegant and amazing to study, completely fresh and intact. This is one of the finest known of a small mintage of proofs, and unsurpassed by any certified. Only 470 struck. Pop 3; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimated Value $17,000 - UP

1868. PCGS graded MS-66. Lovely blue and gold toning with the royal blue shades around the rim, then fading to deep russet and lighter golden to the centers. Both sides are attractively toned. Production of quarters (and most silver coins) declined as the value of silver coins remained above their face value at this time. Hence most of these were hoarded or exported. This is one of the finest known today, with a bold strike, elegant toning and fantastic quality. Only 29,400 struck. Pop 2; 1 finer in 67. (PCGS # 5472) Estimated Value $12,000 - UP

1872. NGC graded MS-67. Nice antique toning with hues of steel-bluish and russet colors on both sides. Not only are the colors intense and glorious, but the surfaces are outstanding. In fact, this is the finest example known technically. Notice how Liberty seems to float above the lustrous fields with her frosted dress and pole. Fantastic eye appeal and a true condition rarity! Pop 1; the finest example graded at both services. Estimated Value $14,000 - UP

1878-S. NGC graded MS-65. Fully white and lustrous, and boldly struck right down to the knobby claws on the eagle. The surfaces are sparkling and bright, with no detracting marks and just a few faint ticks noted when examined with a strong loupe. The mintage of 140,000 should be ignored as most of these disappeared and precious few are known today. Here is one that is tied with three others as the finest seen by NGC. Today, CoinFacts estimates that only 300 examples survive in all grades, and this one is tied with the finest seen by either grading service. The surfaces are nearly perfect in quality, notice the open fields show just a few tiny ticks, and the eye appeal is unending. A delight to behold! Pop 4; none finer at NGC. Estimated Value $9,000 - UP

1881. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo. A wonderful gem proof cameo quarter. The surfaces are pristine, with no signs of handling whatsoever. The only difference from the day this one was struck is the slow and natural progress of russet toning around the rim, lighter on the obverse with more seen on the reverse. Definetly one of the finest to survive from the original mintage of only 975 struck. Pop 1; 1 finer in 68 Star for PRCA. Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000

1883. PCGS graded Proof 68 Cameo. A fully white gem cameo proof which offers a full and complete strike, glittering mirror fields and ample contrast between the two, in order to win the coveted cameo award from PCGS. This one is right near the very top of those known today, certainly in the top ten, and this from an original mintage of only 1,039 struck. An extraordinary example of this scarce date. Pop 4; 1 finer in 68+ Cameo. (PCGS # 85584) Estimated Value $10,000 - UP
