Lot 994
1856. PCGS graded Proof 64. Well struck with even toning. A handsome example of this ever popular and rare issue, with only 1,500 struck. The original Large cents, first officially launched in 1793 were simply too big and heavy, despite their metallic value of being somewhat worth less than a cent, a proposal was launched to reduce the size of the "cent" that became law. These 1856 Flying Eagle cents were the first widely circulating small cents, and proved enormously popular with merchants and the public. No longer would making change often involve several of the Large cents, but transactions could now be more convenient and pocket friendly. The 1856 Flying Eagle cents were struck in tiny numbers, but in 1857 when the design was adopted, became widely seen and popular. Here is a formidable example of the first year of issue, in near gem condition. Pop 228; 73 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 2037) Value $15,000 - 16,000

1856. PCGS graded Proof - AU Details, Scratch. Some obverse marks with a couple of shallow rim nicks too. This one must have slipped into circulation for a brief time soon after being struck. The design details are all crisp and complete, and this is still a desirable example of this ever popular key date. Only 1,500 struck (PCGS # 2037) Value $5,000 - UP

Lot 996
1859. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Well struck with lovely light even toning on both sides. A rare single year type coin, especially so in gem proof. The obverse design continued through the end of the series with minor modification until 1909. These included the postioning of Liberty's head and of course the planchet composition, which included a 12 percent nickel alloy along with 88 percent copper, even this modest amount of nickel gave these cents a whitish hue in color. In 1864, the nickel portion was removed, and planchets were changed to a French bronze blend of 95 percent copper, 5 percent tin and zinc.

For the reverse, there is an open wreath, with no shield at the top. This feature was changed in 1860 to include a small shield at the top of the wreath, creating a single year type coin for the 1859 Indian cent. An important offering for the type or date specialist. Pop 6; 8 finer at NGC in CAM and UCAM. Value $3,500 - 3,600
