Lot 653
1798 NC-1 R7 NGC Fine Details Corrosion. Olive brown and chocolate with a hint of gloss on the devices. The surfaces are covered with fine granularity and there are tiny specks of reddish verdigris scattered over the obverse, mostly at TY and in the field before the face. The only significant mark is an obvious planchet flake or void on the chin. The date and legends are complete and clear. EDS, Breen state I, without any trace of the die crack at TY. Not a perfect cent but still one of the better examples among the seven that are known. Only the 1798 NC-2 is rarer than the NC-1, and only by a single example. Graded net VG7 and tied for CC#4 honors in the Bland census. Noyes says F12 sharpness net VG7 and CC#4 by itself, his photo #23258. The finest known example is a badly scratched net F12, and the ANS piece is a corroded net VG10. In fact none of the seven examples is problem-free so waiting for a choice one may be a pipe dream. Our grade is net VG7. And it comes with a great provenance that includes some of the brightest luminaries in large cent collecting. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Value $7,500 - UP

1801 S-218 R5+ 3-Error Reverse G5. Several points sharper but the surfaces are covered with fine roughness, strongest in protected areas. The date and legends are complete and easily readable (except for RTY due to the die failure in that area), and all three of the die-cutter errors on the reverse are clear. Not perfect but quite decent for the grade. Value $750 - UP
