1798 S-172 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VF30. Sharpness near EF40 with too many light contact marks for the sharpness grade, the only notable ones a long diagonal nick hidden in the hair under IB in LIBERTY and a very tiny rim bruise under the 9 in the date. Glossy chocolate and steel brown with delicate overtones of light bluish steel in protected areas. Sharply struck EDS, Breen state II, with smooth, slightly reflective fields on both sides. The tiny lumps from obverse die rust described by Breen for his state II are clear. In addition, there is sharp, clear doubling visible on both sides, including a double profile. The doubling is strongest on ONE and UNITED where the offset is much larger than normal for simple die bounce. Possibly a double struck cent that didn’t shift much between impressions. Not in the condition census for the variety, but a sharply struck cent with excellent eye appeal anyway. Value $1,500 - UP

LDS, Breen state III, with doubled clashmarks on both sides. A decent example of this scarce die variety. Our grade is VF25. Graded VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#12 in the Noyes census, his photo #24005. Bland says VF25. Our grade is VF25. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Comes with a nice provenance. 1799 S-189 R2 PCGS VG Detail Scratch. The surfaces are smooth but there are three nearly vertical disjointed scratches on the upper part of the obverse and some small nicks scattered over both sides. No verdigris. The obverse is an attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown; the reverse is a mix of light chocolate and medium olive with a few areas of lighter reddish brown from an old cleaning. EDS, Breen state I. The strike is excellent with both the date and LIBERTY strong. The legends on the reverse are clear except for weakness on EN in CENT thanks to some nicks. Too bad about those three scratches but the strong date and LIBERTY are a big plus. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG7. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 36140) Value $5,000 - UP

1799 S-189 R2. PCGS graded Good-6. Slightly glossy dark chocolate brown. The surfaces are covered with uniform very fine granularity but there is no verdigris. The only marks of any note are a dull, light nick connecting the upper edges of the two 9's and a small pinprick under the I in AMERICA. The date is easily readable but the bottom edges of all 4 digits fade into the rim below. LIBERTY is strong, as is all the reverse except for TATES, which is faint due to the usual uneven strike. MDS, Breen state IV, with a thin rim cud break over AM in addition to the earlier one at F-A. Graded G6 by Del Bland. Our grade is G6 as well, same as the PCGS grade. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 36140) Value $4,000 - UP

1800 S-201 R4+ VG10. Sharpness perhaps closer to VF20 but the planchet is dented and bent, and the surfaces are covered with minor roughness mixed with specks of verdigris. The toning is a decent medium reddish chocolate and steel brown, and the surfaces are rather glossy in spite of the minor roughness. E-MDS, Breen state II. The most interesting feature on this cent is the presence of a clearly defined "S" from STATES near the dentil tips left of the hair ribbon. Perhaps the depression that houses the stray S is an off-center indent error, and the "spoiled planchet" was later struck properly. An interesting cent. Value $500 - UP

1800 S-202 R4+. PCGS graded AU-53. Frosty steel and olive brown with traces of reddish tan in protected areas on the obverse. The only notable marks are a spot of darker brown toning (not carbon) on the upper part of the neck and a trio of very fine hairline scratches in the field before the portrait. M-LDS, Breen state VI. The obverse die is shattered and the reverse is badly bulged and shows multiple strong die clashmarks. Struck slightly off center to K-6 leaving some of the dentils off the planchet, but the date and legends are all present. Our grade is EF40. This cent was discovered in England and it has not been seen by Noyes or Bland, but clearly it ranks very high in the condition census. A highlight of the large cents in the Widok Collection.
