Wreath Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2
1793 S-5 R4 Wreath Cent with Large LIBERTY. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate with a hint of light olive on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and there are no notable contact marks. The only "defects" are a few microscopic planchet flakes or chips that can help identify this cent (all as struck). The notable ones are just left of the L in LIBERTY, another midway between the F in OF and the adjacent A in AMERICA, and one more between the R & I in AMERICA. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state I late or II early. There is a rim cud at the dentils over LI in LIBERTY but the cud over BER has not formed. The obverse is nicely centered on the planchet while the reverse is slightly misaligned to K-5, but the border beads are complete around both sides. The S-5 variety is the only 1793 Wreath Cent to have a large LIBERTY and large numerals in the date, the same ones used to make dies for the Chain Cents. All other varieties of 1793 Wreath Cents used punches with smaller numerals and letters. A choice Wreath Cent that has great eye appeal. This cent is listed twice in the Noyes census. As photo #85329 it is graded AU50 sharpness net EF45, and as photo #28877 it is graded EF40 Choice. Bland graded it EF45. Our grade is EF40+ Choice, very close to EF45. Comes with a nice provenance that has been traced back more than a century. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 3 finer: 1 in 62, 1 in 65, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 35447) Estimated Value $50,000 - UP

1793 Wreath Cent "Smith Counterfeit" F15. Very attractive glossy medium brown. A wonderful example of the work of "Smith of Ann Street." These "Smith Counterfeits" were well worn early large cents, mostly dated 1793 and 1794, that were smoothed down and engraved to resemble higher grade 1793 cents. The engraver was William D. Smith of New York City, and this example showcases the skills of a great artist who produced a limited number of these cents in the mid-1800's, all prior to 1868. The devices on this cent resemble the Sheldon-8 die variety, but none of the details is a perfect match. Noyes photo #62656. Weight 150.7 grains. One of the finer examples known today and it comes with a nice provenance. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP

1793 Wreath Cent "Smith Counterfeit" VF20. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and this is the finest example of a "Smith Counterfeit" this cataloger has seen. In fact the reverse could pass as a genuine mint product. Resembles the Sheldon-8 die variety. Noyes photo #61452. Weight 166.2 grains. Estimated Value $2,500 - UP

1793 S-9 Wreath Cent PCGS P/FR Details Devices Engraved. Type with a Vine & Bars Edge. Glossy light olive and chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and basically this is just a heavily worn Sheldon-9 Wreath Cent that has had the hair strengthened. The level of engraving skill displayed here is not up to the level of the famous "Smith Counterfeits," and only the hair details have been disturbed. To call this a product of Mr. Smith would do a disservice to the man's memory. The date is complete and easily readable as is LIBERTY, but most of the devices on the reverse are worn smooth. Very late die state. The die crack and swelling at ICA is quite advanced. Our grade is Basal State-1. Weight 186.1 grains. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 1347) Estimated Value $200 - UP
