1808 S-277 R2. PCGS graded EF-45. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown in protected areas. Flowline luster covers the protected areas on both sides and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Lightly worn with just a few light contact marks. The notable marks are a minor rim bruise at star 2, a couple more barely visible ones at stars 10 & 11, and a stronger one at ME in AMERICA. LDS, Breen state IX, with star 1 quite weak but still visible (the so-called 12-Star die state) and strong die cracks through the D in UNITED. There is a small internal cud break inside that D. Struck with the obverse die misaligned to K-7.5. Our grade is VF35. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 8 finer. 1808 S-278 R3. PCGS graded MS-62+ Brown. CAC. Choice frosty tan and light brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highest points of the devices. Essentially flawless; a tiny struck-through line under the second 8 in the date and a small planchet flake on the end of the chin (both as struck) can help identify this cent. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the portrait. EDS but not quite the earliest with a tiny crumble between two dentils under the right edge of the first 8 in the date. Not seen by Noyes or Bland. Our grade is AU58+, very close to MS60. No spots or stains, but there are very shallow planchet flakes on the bust tip and near the dentils at stars 1-4 (all as struck). The only contact marks are a few microscopic pinpricks between the earlobe and front edge of the neck. LDS, Breen state VII, with flowlined fields and two small internal cud breaks in the leaves at the top of the wreath. Our grade is EF40. 1810 S-284 R3. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Lustrous medium chocolate brown and darker olive with lighter frosty brown in protected areas. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and it is choice except for a splash of extremely fine reddish corrosion nestled into the recesses of the hair at the shoulder. The only other notable mark is a tiny rim nick directly above star 8. M-LDS, Breen state III, with dull die clashmarks and weakened dentils on both sides. Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #38514. Bland says MS60 and CC#3 in his census. Our grade is AU58. Comes with a very nice provenance. Flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a trace of rub on the very highest points of the devices. The only marks are a very light vertical scuff over the N in ONE and a tiny scrape on the rim right of the second S in STATES. M-LDS, Breen state III, with flowlined fields and a narrow rim cud break at CA in AMERICA. Noyes graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#2 for the die variety in his census, photo #62097. Not seen by Bland. Our grade is AU55. A very nice example of a relatively common variety that is surprisingly difficult to find in mint state by EAC grading standards. The only marks are a pair of tiny pinpricks over the 13 in the date, a tiny tick on the end of the nose, and a thin nick in the field over the front edge of the head. MDS, Breen state III, with delicately flowlined fields and dull die clashmarks on both sides. Extensive doubling shows on ONE CENT, and some letters display triple outlines (from die bounce or "machine doubling"). Struck slightly off center to K-4.5. Our grade is AU50+, very close to AU55. Looks mint state but there is a faint trace of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only marks are a light scuff on the nose in front of the eye, another under the eye, and a minor rim bruise at star 11. Otherwise this cent is flawless. 1816 N-4 R2. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. CAC. Highly lustrous steel brown and light olive with 15% of the planchet showing mellowed mint red. Mint frost covers this cent and it has outstanding eye appeal. No spots or stains, and the best identifying mark is a barely visible flake on a dentil under the end of the wreath ribbon (as struck). Nicely struck with a bold curl on the forehead. M-LDS. The small dash between the C & A in AMERICA is dull but still visible and a trace of doubling shows on the left end of the bottom of the D in UNITED. Our grade is MS63. A great example of the variety; certainly comparable to the finest example of the variety in the Naftzger collection that brought $10,925 (our sale 2/1/2009:6). LDS with a cud break over AM, and the small dash from the right top of the F in OF is gone. Struck with the reverse rotated 45 degrees CCW. Our grade is EF40. Comes with a nice provenance. 1818 N-3 R3. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. CAC. Frosty bluish steel brown with 15% of the mint color remaining on each side. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only mark is a spot of slightly darker toning in the field before the forehead. M-LDS. The earlier lumps in the field before the portrait and spike up from the top of the coronet are no longer present. The reverse center dot is tiny but remains visible, and the reverse is rotated 40 degrees CCW. Called MS65 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20635. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#1. 1820 N-13 R1 Large Date. PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown. Lustrous bluish steel and olive with underlying mellowed mint red bleeding through in the fields and protected areas. No spots or notable contact marks, but there are traces of an old fingerprint at the bottom of the reverse. MDS with the usual die crack that meanders through the date and stars, most likely from the Randall Hoard of mint state cents. A variety that is common in mint state but this is a really nice one, perfect for a date or type collection. Graded MS65 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #59410. Our grade is MS64+. The only marks are a few tiny ticks in the field between star 12 and the hair and a barely visible hairline scratch hidden among the tiny die rust lumps on the cheek. MDS with fine die rust on the neck and face, and the tiny center dot on the reverse is visible. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#4 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #21684. Our grade is MS60+. The surfaces are smooth and there is just a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only marks are a light scratch arcing between stars 6 & 7, a very faint spot of reddish toning over the right side of the 3 in the date, and a thin diagonal nick over the right side of the O in ONE. Nicely struck E-MDS with crumbling in the dentils at stars 2-3 but no crumbling in the dentils below the 18. The overdate feature is sharp.
