German-born jeweler Andreas Roempler established himself in St. Petersburg in the 1790s. In the St. Petersburg register of the German colony within the city, Roempler is called "the Master of Diamonds," and was the official appraiser to the Imperial Court. Roempler’s eldest daughter, Sofia married goldsmith Gottlieb Ernst Jahn who then became Roempler’s partner. In 1834, Jahn supplied an opal and diamond jewelry suite – tiara, necklace and bracelet, on the occasion of the christening of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich. The price of 169,601 Roubles was the highest ever paid for a christening gift in the 19th Century. In 1833, Carl Eduard Bolin arrived in St. Petersburg and began to work for the firm of Roempler and Jahn. A year later, he married Ernestine Catharina, another daughter of the recently deceased Andreas Roempler, and became a full partner in the firm, which was renamed Jahn & Bolin. Jahn died in 1836, and Bolin was left as partner to Jahn’s widow. In 1839, Jahn & Bolin became Jewelers to the Imperial Court and rose to become the most important jewelry firm in St. Petersburg. Carl Eduard Bolin died in 1864 leaving his part of the firm in the hands of his sons Gustaf and Edward.
