Lot 1132
Einstein, Albert -- Signed Handpainted/Collage Cover (1879-1955) German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity. Cover with a hand-painted collage of Einstein signed "A. Einstein" above the collage. The envelope is not cancelled but is addressed to H M Brehm in Appleton, Wisconsin and bears a German stamp for 45 (Reichspfennig) and a 2¢ American stamp with the dates 1680 and 1930 on it, commemorating Charleston, South Carolina's rice and indigo crops. These stamps, which would have been affixed by Mr. Brehm, could obviously not be used as postage but were representative of Germany and America. Mr. Brehm created many hand-painted covers between 1929 and 1932 and sent them to prominent people. Perhaps because of the creativity displayed by Mr. Brehm, hundreds of the covers were signed and returned to him, most with 1929 and 1930 postmarks. We know that Einstein was in the United States in December 1930. The cover has two vertical folds and one tiny spot at far right edge, otherwise in fine condition. Very attractive. Estimated Value $800 - UP
