Film Pioneer Jesse Lasky, Sr., Archive of Letters to His Son, Jesse, Jr.--Contains the History of Hollywood From 1921 to 1949. Jesse Louis Lasky (1880-1958) was an American film pioneer who, with Samuel Goldfish (Goldwyn) and Cecil B. DeMille, formed Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Co. in 1913 and produced The Squaw Man, the first feature film in Hollywood. Lasky remained vice president when the company merged with Paramount to become Paramount-Famous Players-Lasky Corp. (1916-32), then produced independent films until 1945 when he formed his own company. He produced over one thousand pictures, including Sergeant York (1941), Rhapsody in Blue (1945), and The Great Caruso (1951).

An archive of approximately 320 typed letters signed (most signed "Dad" but some "Jesse L. Lasky, Sr."), over 500 pp, mostly recto, various sizes, datelined Los Angeles, San Antonio, and New York, from June 1, 1921 to October 14, 1949. To Jessy Lasky, Jr. (1910-1988) on stationery including "Famous Players-Lasky Corporation," "Paramount Building," "Pickford-Lasky Productions, Inc.," "RKO Studios, Inc.," "Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc.," various hotel stationery, and personal "Jesse L. Lasky" monogrammed stationery. From early letters asking about his son's grades and activities, Lasky goes on to document the early history of Hollywood in his letters, revealing intimate details and behind-the-scenes information. He recounts his dealings with directors, executives, and stars, including Cecil B. DeMille, Mack Sennett, Sam Goldwyn, Louis B. Mayer, Adolph Zukor, Darryl Zanuck, Jack Warner, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and many more. He chronicles the change from silent film to talkies. In 1928, he writes, "…today I am issuing instructions to make no more silent pictures…"; in 1929, "I know you will be fascinated…when you come to realize the possibilities of talking pictures…Fine plays with fine dialogue, and well acted by capable players, are bound to advance the screen to new and greater heights…"; and in 1930, "The coming of sound has brought a wonderful colony to Hollywood…celebrities of all kinds tumble over one another, but it is becoming to be a real art and intellectual center." Also included are a TLS from Zane Grey (2/13/1923) and a TLS from Charles Laughton (3/31/1937) to Laskey, Sr., as well as an 8 x 10" silver gelatin photograph of Jesse Lasky, Jr., inscribed to his father, "To Dad with / love from / Jess," mounted on board and signed by the photographer, "Peter Hancock '34 / Hollywood, Calif.", and an 8 x 10" studio portrait of Jesse Sr. and Jr. together. Henry Fonda: Vintage Original Collection of 10 Personal and Family Photo Collages Including Jane, Peter, wife Francis, The Tyrone Powers and More (1905-1982) Henry Fonda was a stage and screen actor who enjoyed a career spanning 50 years and starred in a great many classic films of Hollywood. He was nominated for two Best Actor Oscars and won for ON GOLDEN POND. In 1936 Fonda married Francis Seymour Brokaw and had two children, Jane and Peter Fonda, both celebrated actors and producers in their own rights. This lot is a collage of personal photos from about 1940-41 that were professionally mounted on acid free mat boards, possibly at one time framed. There are about 20 photos of celebrities at events, including Tyrone Power, Gary Cooper, Alice Faye, Darryl Zanuck, Cesar Romero and Joan Crawford. But most of the photos are of Henry Fonda with Jane and individual photos of Jane no older than two, possibly three, years of age, along with pictures of other family members, including Brokaw. Also included, unrelated to Fonda, are three boards of photos from the 1935 film version of LES MISERABLES which starred Fredric March, Charles Laughton and Francis Drake. About 90 photos total in this collection, all are clearly rare and in near flawless condition as they were extremely well archived. Boards meausure 21 x 16", the photos range in sizes but on average 3 x 4". Estimated Value $250 - UP

Scandalous Hollywood in Two Photos: Carmen Miranda and Jayne Mansfield, Leaving Nothing to Imagination. In 1940, during a publicity shoot with Carmen Miranda in full costume was being lifted enthusiastically into the air by co-star Cesar Romero for their film, WEEKEND IN HAVANA. In the early 50s, one of the tabloid magazines revealed the photo to a storm of controversy. Offered is an original 5 x 4" vintage photo from this shoot, a sepia tinted silver nitrate photo. So many copies were made of this photo that one can note the clarity issues in restrikes and restrikes of those restrikes (with one such photo also included for comparison) The original photo is sharp and in fine condition save for minor evidence of handling.
The other is of Jayne Mansfield on double weight glossy card stock. While risque, it certainly achieved Ms. Mansfield's signature look. 5½ x 3½" with a stain to lower right border easily matted out.250. Estimated Value $250 - UP

Carmen Miranda, Cesar Romero: Scandalous Vintage Original Photo That Caused A Shockwave in Hollywood. Carmen Miranda, "The Brazilian Bombshell" co-starred with Cesar Romero, Alice Faye and John Payne in WEEK-END IN HAVANA in 1941. During a publicity shoot for the film with Romero tossing Miranda into the air in a dramatic dance move, her colorful, billowy skirt opened to the camera, which revealed too much. Images from the shoot were the talk of underground Hollywood and certainly passed around, which likely factored in Fox canceling her contract. She continued to make films for other studios but talk of the photo continued to be tabloid/scandal magazine fodder, even into the early 50s making the cover of True Police Cases: "How Hollywood Stars Figure In Lewd Photo Racket!" This is an 8 x 10 vintage original photo from the period in very good condition with a small tear repaired with archival tape on verso and very light creasing and toning throughout. James Dean: Hollywood Icon of the 1950s, Inscribed and Autographed Photo with LOA by James Spence (1931-1955) James Byron Dean became a cultural icon during the Golden Age of Hollywood, the first actor to be nominated posthumously for a Best Actor Academy Award and the only actor to have had two posthumous acting nominations. His three biggest films, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, EAST OF EDEN and GIANT showcased an astounding acting ability which mesmerized the youth of the 1950s. Further, his bad boy persona, car racing, and sexual ambiguity were a perfect storm of young adult angst and rebellion. Today, he is second only to Marilyn Monroe and arguably even with Chaplin as cultural icons of early to mid-century Hollywood. As such his autograph, most especially a signed photo and other ephemera are highly prized by collectors. Here James Dean has inscribed "To Carl, Best Wishes James Dean" in blue ink on an original Warner Brothers 8 x 10" publicity still. Inscription and autograph are bold and clean with the photograph exhibiting only slight evidence of handling. Letter of authenticity by James Spence Authentication. Excellent. Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks: Outstanding Signed Photo, ca. 1924. Mary Pickford (1892-1979) and Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) when married were considered the first "Hollywood Royalty". One cannot even begin to discuss the beginnings of the industry of American film without first diving into the cinema classics that starred each of these actors. Both were early champions of the Motion Picture Academy and founders of the studio United Artists. Their marriage lasted 16 years and during that time, they had no equals with respect to the impact their talent and dedication informed the industry of American film. Beautifully signed sepia photo by both actors executed in steel point fountain pin with black ink. The mat and frame appear original to the time. Image as matted is 8 x 7" and framed to 13 x 12.
