GEORGE Vintage Original Magic ca. 1920s Stone Lithography Poster, Very Fine on Linen. Grover George was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1887. He worked his way up from performing in small towns until his success came to the attention of Howard Thurston, the most renowned magician in the United States at the time. Thurston went ridiculously out of his way to oppress George's success with frivolous lawsuits and even renting out theaters so he had no places to perform. George then took to touring South America and other countries to great acclaim.
One of the best GEORGE magic posters printed by Otis Lithograph Co., Cleveland, Ohio "The Supreme Master of Magic" from his "Triumphant American Tour". What makes this poster so appealing is that it includes most of the elements from his other posters; Mischievous devils, the mysteries of the Great Pyramids and the exoticism of the Far East and is extremely colorful and appealing. Approximately 27 x 41" The poster was beautifully conserved on linen this year by Jaime Mendez Poster Conservation Co. in California and is now graded very fine on linen. Estimate Value $800 - UP

Angie Dickinson: Intimate 7 Page Letter in 1965 Regarding Burt Bacharach, Frank Sinatra and the film What's New Pussycat? (born 1931) Intimate 7 page letter completely in her hand on Dorchester Hotel, London stationery. This was a pivotal time in her life after acclaim for her film The Killers and the beginning of her 16 year relationship with Burt Bacharach. Here she writes about the difficulties he is having scoring and writing songs for WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT, her helping him and Hal David in every possible way through the difficulties, her reaching out to Frank Sinatra to hear some of the songs, revealing Bacharach had proposed marriage, her accepting but not knowing when that would happen. A revealing letter to a woman named Laura who clearly Dickinson was very close to. What stands out is her breaking through Bacharach's "writer's block" and truly being his muse and helping him find his inspiration. A fantastic bit of pop-culture, life behind the scenes, intimate and romantic of a very popular couple in the 1960s, their work, and a very succesful film. Estimate Value $400 - UP

Al Jolson: Rare, Early Oversized Photo in Black Face While with Dockstader's Minstrels, NYC (1909) (1886-1950) Russian born (Asa Yoelson) American singer, actor, comedian and for years America's most popular and highest paid entertainer. His style and enterpretation of music ushered in the modern musical; his recordings were in virtually every home. Obviously Jolson is known for his work as a minstrel singer at a time where it was a regular feature in theater and vaudeville since the mid-19th Century. But no one interpreted jazz recordings like Jolson, not only in energy but in sentimentality. Completely inappropriate today, it was a significant genre in entertainment at the time and a part of history. "If blackface has its shameful poster boy, it is Al Jolson" -- Ted Gioia. Nevertheless if any one individual embodied the complex nature of race in America at the time, and in bringing black music to white audiences through blackface, there is also no other like Jolson. Also, Jolsen starred in THE JAZZ SINGER which forever changed the history of movies with the thunderclap that was talking/singing in film. With that bit of history, offered is a very rare 11 x 14" sepia photo of Al Jolson around 23 years old in full minstrel makeup and costume. Signed in black fountain pen by Jolson: "Compliments of Al Jolson, To My Friend Neal Abel, May 28 1909." Photo has been mounted on card stock decades ago, but photo is in remarkable condition with just soft corners and a ding or two. An historic early 20th Century piece of American entertainment. Henry Fonda: Vintage Original Collection of 10 Personal and Family Photo Collages Including Jane, Peter, wife Francis, The Tyrone Powers and More (1905-1982) Henry Fonda was a stage and screen actor who enjoyed a career spanning 50 years and starred in a great many classic films of Hollywood. He was nominated for two Best Actor Oscars and won for ON GOLDEN POND. In 1936 Fonda married Francis Seymour Brokaw and had two children, Jane and Peter Fonda, both celebrated actors and producers in their own rights. This lot is a collage of personal photos from about 1940-41 that were professionally mounted on acid free mat boards, possibly at one time framed. There are about 20 photos of celebrities at events, including Tyrone Power, Gary Cooper, Alice Faye, Darryl Zanuck, Cesar Romero and Joan Crawford. But most of the photos are of Henry Fonda with Jane and individual photos of Jane no older than two, possibly three, years of age, along with pictures of other family members, including Brokaw. There are two boards of skiing in Snow Valley and photos with Tyrone Power, his wife and children. Also included, unrelated to Fonda, are three boards of photos from the 1935 film version of LES MISERABLES which starred Fredric March, Charles Laughton and Francis Drake. About 90 photos total in this collection, all are clearly rare and in near flawless condition as they were extremely well archived. But not enough credit is given to her musical comedy, which once Hearst took over her "management" failed to blossom as he kept forcing her into less suitable roles. Here are four beautiful portraits for Ms. Davies from her estate. Two from the 30s, both deckle-edged, are by acclaimed photographers Elmer Fryer and James Manatt. The other two are later in life by John Engstead, one with her husband Horace Brown, whom she married 11 weeks after Hearst's death. All four in excellent condition. Estimate Value $400 - UP

Marlon Brando, THE WILD ONE, 12 Rare Photos by Irving Lippman and Homer Van Pelt, 1953. Marlon Brando (1924-2004) one of the most influential and at times, controversial actors of the 20th Century. His performances in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, ON THE WATERFRONT, THE GODFATHER, LAST TANGO IN PARIS and GUYS AND DOLLS will remain classics of their genres. But he made some interesting choices along the way and certainly his role as Johnny Strabler, the biker outlaw in THE WILD ONE, proved to be a significant cultural touchstone which was inspired by a rise in biker violence in the late 1940s and early 50s. The film today is still well received but it is at times melodrama bordering on camp and very much of the time. But the imagery in the film is so iconic, and Brando as Strabler has never been equaled (Mildred: "Hey, Johnny, what are you rebelling against?" Johnny Strabler: "What've you got?") Offered are twelve (12) vintage original stills from the original release in 1953. Most are stamped with Columbia Pictures on verson with credits to acclaimed photographers Irving Lippman or Homer Van Pelt. Nine of the photos feature Brando; one is an astonishing shot of the Black Rebels motorcycle gang roaring into town as if on horses in a Western film, riots, and a fantastic image of Lee Marvin on his bike. All are in overall excellent conditon, one with some edgewear. Estimate Value $600 - UP
