Half Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 788
1797. 15 Stars. LM-1, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-65. Lustrous and smooth with lovely russet color around the obverse rims and throughout reverse, with the devices notably bright silver and contrasting with the surrounding fields. Incredible quality for the specialist, with a rather sharp strike for this issue as Liberty's curls show strong separation and the eagle shows many of his wing feathers. The central details are slightly soft, but show more detail than commonly seen on this early half dime. The Draped Bust, Small Eagle type coin was issued only in 1796 and 1797, hence precious few exist in any grade. This particular type coin has long been known to be one of the most difficult to find in any grade. Here is a stunning Gem example, and one of finest known too. A staggering opportunity for the specialist. Only 44,527 struck. Pop 1; 1 finer in 66 for the variety. Estimate Value $50,000 - UP

Lot 789
1800. NGC graded MS-65. An extraordinary condition rarity, as half dimes of the earliest types are nearly impossible to find well preserved. Here is a most notable exception, retaining Gem quality surfaces and elegant visual appeal. The strike is sharp throughout, and the surfaces are amazing to examine. Later die state with a die chip below the date as commonly seen. Boldly struck and even light blue toning. Housed in an Early Style Holder. Only 24,000 struck. Pop 8; 3 finer; 2 in 66; 1 in 67. Estimate Value $30,000 - 33,000

Lot 790
1800. NGC graded MS-64. Boldly struck and nicely toned with delicate antique lilac and russet shades. Liberty's hair curls are all present and bold, along with the finer details on the eagle's feathers. The fields and devices show only a few tiny scattered marks, none of any consquence. An important type coin, and one which is virtually unobtainable in any mint state grade. Only 24,000 struck. Pop 16; 12 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $18,000 - 19,000

Lot 791
1805. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC. PQ. A lovely coin with beautiful toning. Not only is this a low mintage date, but a high condition rarity which is quite desirable to respresent this issue. Half dime production came to a halt after 1805, only to restart on July 4, 1829 with an entirely new style. This 1805 half dime represents the last of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle design type, and one which is rarely found in grades like this fantastic AU55 coin. Only 15,600 struck. Pop 2; 7 finer, 1 in 55+, 5 in 58, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 4272) Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

1834. LM-4, Rarity 1. NGC graded MS-66. Nicely toned and well struck with reflective fields on both sides. The surfaces are fantastic, with satin smooth luster beneath the delicate lilac and russet tone. Fully struck and appealing. Pop 4; 1 finer in 68 for the variety at NGC. Estimate Value $3,000 - 3,200

Lot 793
1847. NGC graded MS-67. A needle sharp strike with slightly reflective surfaces and untoned. The devices are somewhat frosted, while the fields show slight reflectivity, creating a limited degree of contrast. This is important given the towering grade earned by this majestic example. An extraordinary condition rarity. Pop 2; 1 finer in 68. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

1856. PCGS graded Proof 65. CAC. PQ. Lovely deep blue toning with lilac accents and russet overtones. The strike is needle sharp, and the surfaces are exceptional to retain the gem grade level. These early Proof coins--struck prior to 1857--are quite rare and seldom offered. For the numismatic specialist, this is a rarity that will be long enjoyed after it is purchased. Impressive quality! Only 50 struck. Pop 2; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 4434) Estimate Value $6,500 - 7,000
