Magnificent 19th Century, KPM Hand Painted Tile of Physician / Scholar in Original Antique Frame. KPM (Konigliche Porzellan Manufacktur) crafted some of the most beautiful hand painted tiles in Europe. Their artistry is clearly apparent in the mastery of light, skin tones, fabric and hair. Offered is an exquisite example of KPM's work of scholar, doctor or merchant of some means. He is wearing fine attire, his hands are not calloused from manual labor and in fact well manicured, pince nez reading glasses and two books on the table, his expression deep in thought. Stunning. Especially fine details can be seen in the painting of this gentleman's face, the pale skin of his hands, his gray whispy hair, the fur of his cap and shoulder strap with beaded details and tassel. Tile measures 7¼ x 5¼ and has impressed scepter mark on verso. Besides a Nadeau's Auction sticker on verso, there is also written in pencil the date 1820 and "Dr. Nogard G…." the last name impossible to make out. Indeed this may be a recreation of an early 19th century portrait, common with KPM tiles, we just could not find it. Tile is presented in what appears to be a hand made frame of considerable age, absolutely beautiful and approximately 12 x 10". Wonderful piece. Estimate Value $1,600 - UP
