Darwin, Charles -- ALS Mentioning Peas and the Linnean Society. (1809-82) Autograph letter signed "Ch. Darwin," one page, 7½ x 4½", Down Bromley Kent, Mar. 18., n.y. To an unidentified scientist: " My Dear Sir, I am very much obliged for your note of the 7th & kind permission to incorporate your facts: I have now sent a little notice to the Linnean Society. Many thanks, also for your remarks on the Peas. I send a few of the Peas, which produce the black or intensely purple pods. Pray believe me Your truly obliged Ch. Darwin." Toning on verso at vertical fold, else fine. Matted with an ANS by American philosopher and historian John Fiske (1842-1901) stating that nothing in Darwin's work is incompatible with the strictest theism, with 1881 postmark, also matted with biographical information and an evolving man and framed to an overall size of 21½ x 22¼". Einstein, Albert -- TLS About an "educational campaign against prejudice and race-hatred". (1879-1955) German-born physicist who developed the theory of relativity. Typed letter signed "A. Einstein," one page, 7¾ x 6½", on blind embossed personal letterhead from Princeton, Oct. 29, 1947. To Mr. Camille Honig "c.c. Jewish Labor Committee" thanking him for his visit and for information about the activities of the Jewish Labor Committee. "The educational campaign against prejudice and race-hatred…is important for the promotion of peace and justice. It is also apt to strengthen Labor in its hard fight against the reactionary tendencies of the present time. I hope that your work in this country will be successful." Fine condition. Matted with three images of Einstein, a quote, a biographical plaque, and an article about him, all framed to an overall size of 20 x 24½". Estimate Value $2,500 - UP

Freud, Sigmund -- TLS to a Young Admirer Mentioning Psychoanalysis. (1856 - 1909) Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis. Typed letter signed "Freud," one page, 8½ x 6", in German, Vienna, May 25, 1924. Typed on letterhead engraved, "Prof. Fr. Freud / Wien IX Berggasse 10," with original stamped envelope addressed to Arnold Weissberger, first at Cambridge, Mass., then forwarded to Long Island, New York.

Freud writes to a young student in the United States who had apparently come to Vienna when he was on vacation: "Die Jugend ist ja immer enthusiastisch und überträgt leicht ihr Interesse von der Sache auf die Person. Ich hoffe, dass Ihr Interesse für die Psychoanalyse anhalten wird, auch wenn die Person, in der Sie es verkðrpern, nicht mehr da ist. Wenn Sie einmal nach Wien Kommen, wählen Sie dazu nicht die Hochsommerzeit, zu welcher wir alle die Stadt verlassen. Mit freundlichen Wünschen Ihr Freud."

Translation: "Dear Sir, Youth is forever enthusiastic, and easily projects its interest in a subject onto a person. I hope your interest in psychoanalysis will endure, even if the person that you see as its embodiment is no longer present. If you're coming to Vienna at some point, don't pick the middle of Summer, when all of us have left the city. With cordial wishes, Yours Freud." Toning, a couple of edge chips, an old tape mark at top of page, and some wrinkling. Boldly signed by Freud. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

Meninger, Karl -- TLS to a Fellow Psychiatrist: "All the state governors have decided that state hospitals are their number one problem". (1893-1990) Psychiatrist who co-founded with his father the Menninger Clinic (1919), a psychiatric facility in Topeka, that grew into the Menninger Foundation. Typed letter signed, one page, 11 x 8½", The Menninger Foundation stationery, Topeka, Kansas, April 18, 1950. To Dr. Harry Wagenheim, at Yale, in part, "We have been at least victorious in our battle with the VA… However, the whole experience has had a very demoralizing effect…You probably have heard about the meeting in New York which the Menninger Foundation had as part of its big fund-raising drive. Over one hundred influential people were at the meeting, and I think it went very well. I was in Pennsylvania for a meeting of the Advisory Council to the Council of State Governments. All the state governors have decided that state hospitals are their number one problem, and I have been on an advisory committee preparing recommendations on how to improve the state hospital systems…."

With two additional typed letters signed by his brother William C.Menninger (1899-1966), one signed "Dr. Will", the other "Bill"; these may be secretarial but have significant content. In one he writes to Dr. Wagenheim, "This is to remind you of my request to have you please put down one or two or five or any number of points that you believe we as psychiatrists might say to a group of primary or secondary school teachers that would be helpful to them. I hope you will take time to do this for our Public Education Committee activities". With a letter from Dr.Wagenheim presenting the three Menninger letters to a collector. Estimate Value $300 - UP

Newton, Sir Isaac -- Subpoena Signed in a Counterfeiting Case as Warden of the Royal Mint. (1643-1727) English physicist and mathematician whose discoveries in optics, mechanics, and mathematics made him the culminating figure of the scientific revolution of the 17th century. His Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, 1687) was one of the most important single works in the history of modern science. He spent the last three decades of his life serving as Warden (1696-1699) and Master (1700-1727) of the Royal Mint.

Manuscript document signed "Is. Newton" as Warden of the Royal Mint, one page, vellum; 3 x 12½" (London), Aug. 19, 1698/99. Being a warrant of subpoena against Michael Gillingham on a charge of bribery for giving Thomas Holloway a sum of money to go to Scotland to prevent him from giving testimony against William Chaloner, who was charged with counterfeiting the coin of the realm. A few words of text are not legible due to soiling and smudging, but most of the text and the signature are quite legible. A transcription is matted with the document, along with images of Newton and information about him and his discoveries.

Newton estimated that 20% of the coins taken in during the recoinage of 1696 were counterfeit. Counterfeiting was high treason, punishable by being hanged, drawn, and quartered. Newton avidly pursued counterfeiters and successfully prosecuted 28 of them. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

Pasteur, Louis -- Autograph Letter Signed as President of the Pasteur Institute. (1822-1895) Microbiologist and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization. Autograph letter signed "L. Pasteur" on Institut Pasteur stationery, 4¼ x 5", in French, Paris, July 18, 1889. To Monsieur A. Lesage congratulating him on having won the prize given annually by the French Youth Union. Pasteur had presided over the distribution of prizes some years ago by that association and at that time had given the association 500 francs to found an annual prize. Toning and light soiling; very good. Matted and framed to an overall size of 16¾ x 21½". Estimate Value $600 - UP

von Volkmann, Richard -- Handwritten Notes & Sketches For an 1888 Lecture. (1830-1889) Considered the father of orthopedic surgery. He pioneered Lister's antiseptic procedures in Germany and was the lead physician for the German military during two wars. Volkmann's Contracture and the Hueter-Volkmann Law are named after him. He also wrote books of children's fairy tales and poems under the name of Richard Leander.

Autograph notes and eight sketches prepared for a lecture given in 1888, 4 pages (front and back of 2 sheets), 13 x 8¼, in German, no place, 1888. One page is titled "Ankylosen - Anwachsung der Patella in Flexionstellung" [Anchylosis - Increase of patella in flexion position]. Anchylosis is an abnormal stiffening and immobility of a joint due to fusion of the bones. Dr. von Volkmann drew a large sketch illustrating fusion of the tibia and the femur, followed by his notes; a second sketch is on the verso.

Another page is headed "Elongation of the Femoral Condyles" and holds six sketches, and Dr. von Volkmann's notes, some of which are: "Already shown in schematic wood sections in the Berlinder clinical week-paper in a work on the treatment of the knee joint anchylosis by simple osteotomy above or under the knee joint, or by double osteotomy, at the same time above and below the knee joint." Four sketches follow: "Osteotomy above the knee, Osteotomy below the knee, Osteotomy above and below the knee." His notes continue: "Ratios of the knee joint in knee joint anchylosis of individuals which grow strongly afterwards. Hypertrophic elongation of the femoral condyles as a result of a lack of articular pain. 2 Sketches: Legend: will initially be held back by untrained persons for the very ordinary luxatio or subluxatio. The ligg. lateralia which, to a certain extent, form the radius sector are now much too short. If the breakage is now carried out by force, then either
1.) a total dislocation
2.) or favorable case (s) with low elongation the femoral condyles, which are softened by loss … (atrophic, lipomarian) are infused, squeezed together. Then the tibia and the femur could be placed in a straight position (a kind of indentation (?) or a 'kink'."

Light overall toning; toned line at edges from previous framing. As yet unpublished except for facsimile in JANUS 43, 324 and 325 (1939). Estimate Value $1,800 - UP
