Lot 714
1909. PCGS graded Proof 64. CAC. PQ. Light reddish toning visible in the fields. When the Philadelphia Mint launched the new incuse design by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt in 1908 his revolutionary designs were met with a resounding thud. Hopeful and expectant orders for the 1908 Proof quarter eagles were met with crickets in 1909 when subsequent orders fell off dramatically for coinage from the second year of issue. With similar incuse designs forthcoming from the Paris Mint, this new style was eventually accepted and today specialists understand the progressive nature of the stylistic designs presented here. Hence the rarity of this prized 1909 proof quarter eagle. An ideal coin to put away and enjoy, with knowledge that styles come and go, but proof gold coins are always a classic rarity. Only 139 struck, with less than 100 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. Pop 27; 4 finer, 3 in 65, 1 in 66+. (PCGS # 7958) Estimate Value $20,000 - 22,000
