Lot 663
Cr. 7, $20 March 2, 1872. State of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66EPQ. A pretty Gem example of the Revenue Bond Scrip issue of 1872, which was printed with the intention to relieve the state of its guarantee of the bonds of the Blue Ridge Railroad Company. The state legislature acted to prevent these notes from being placed into circulation when it was discovered that the corrupt Reconstruction-era state covernment had apparently duplicated the order of these notes from the American Bank Note Company, resulting in $5 million in notes being shipped--once to the governor and once to the state treasurer. Estimate Value $75 - 100
