Trade Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 477
1873. NGC graded MS-65. This is a stunning example of the first year of issue of the Trade dollar. These new coins were originally called "Commercial Dollars" and were authorized by the Act of February 12, 1873 and therein these were renamed Trade Dollars. These were intended to compete and circulate alongside with the Mexican silver peso in the Orient, widely used in that region. The vast majorty of 1873 dated Trade dollars from all mints ended up in China where they were assayed and blessed by the local merchants as having good silver and actually a tad more silver than the Peso. Hence few of this original issue date remained in the United States, and most of the coins that went to the Orient and survived at all show chop marks, which were imparted by local merchants to note their acceptance in trade.

This particular coin is one of the finer examples known today, and offers glistening frosty luster and a sharp strike throughout. Memorable quality like this is always hard to find, and worth the premium paid to capture it. Don't miss out if you are a serious specialist. Well struck and fully white. Pop 6; 2 finer in 66. Estimate Value $7,500 - 8,000

This issue is always popular with collectors for the branch mintmark and scarce when found this nice and attractive. Pop 50; 30 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7035) Estimate Value $4,200 - 4,500

1875-S. PCGS graded MS-65+. PQ. This is a high condition rarity of this challenging San Fransico issue. The surfaces are what really set this coin apart from the others, as they are so clean and attractive. The color is pleasing too with natural white frost dominating the patina, along with a gentle scattering of russet and gold starting to form. Clearly this coin was set aside generations ago and soon after struck to retain such amazing quality and appeal. A memorable example! Well struck and a frosty white gem. Pop 2; 11 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7039) Estimate Value $10,000 - 11,000

Lot 481
1876-CC. DDR, FS-801 (FS-014). PCGS graded MS-62. Nicely toned with antique golden russet spanning both sides. The strike is sharp and pleasing for this rare issue. Notice on the lower reverse where the branch is doubled, with the second branch well below the primary, this is a wonderful example of a doubled die as rarely is the offset so dramatic! This impressive doubled die reverse was discovered by the famed dealer Jack Beymer at least 30 years ago and was well documented at the time. However, precious few have been discovered, confirming the long held rarity of this prized die variety. To date perhaps 100 to 150 have been certified between both major grading services. That's not many given how strong the market is for Trade dollars. Bear that in mind when forming your bid. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services for the variety. (PCGS # 145815) Estimate Value $13,000 - 14,000
